@WEEVILSBASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST BISONS

SEARCY, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team split a Great American Conference doubleheader against Harding University Monday afternoon in Searcy, Arkansas.

Game one of the day for Arkansas-Monticello (26-16, 21-9 GAC) against the Bisons of HU (19-25, 13-17 GAC) featured the Weevils on the scoreboard first in the opening inning after Brady Weiss knocked in Nick Piraino for the early 1-0 lead.

Drake Rowton followed up in the second inning with a two-run home run of his own, giving UAM a 3-0 advantage over the Bisons.

Harding however answered back with a nine run inning in the bottom of the second, and added three more runs in the third to take a 12-3 lead over the Weevils.

Arkansas-Monticello went on to score later in the fourth on RBI singles from Brian Ray and Weiss, and in the sixth inning on a RBI single from Nick Piraino, and a sacrifice fly from Sean Wagner to put the score at 12-7. Despite the UAM comeback, HU was able to seal the game off at 14-7 overall.

Braden Chambers started on the mound for UAM in this contest, and Michael Harrison, Nicholas Duthu, and Jared Libke all came on to make relief appearances as well.

The second match-up of the afternoon saw Arkansas-Monticello once again on the board first in the opening inning of the game after Andres Rios singled to center field to bring home Ray for the 1-0 lead.

Rios singled to center again in the top of the third to score Weiss to push the Weevil lead out to 2-0, and UAM secured an additional run in the top of the fourth as Alex Smith stole second base which saw Austin Brakebill steal home for the run.

Despite the Weevils allowing two runs in the top of the seventh, Dawson Moser (S, 6) would come in to throw the final inning to record the save and secure the victory for UAM.

Kris Brown (W, 5-3) got the start in the final game of the series, pitching 6.0 total innings, allowing one earned run and totaling two strikeouts in the winning effort.

UAM will hit the field next tomorrow, Tuesday, April 25, as the Weevils head to Fort Smith, Arkansas to take on non-conference opponent Arkansas-Fort Smith in a 3 p.m. match-up on the road.
