MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team improved its win streak to seven games after a 114-82 victory over Randall University on Wednesday from the Steelman Field House in Monticello, Arkansas.
Austin Hardy and
Wanya King paced Weevil scoring with 27 points and 25 points, respectively.
UAM continued its impressive offense early this year by shooting 57.9 percent from the floor and 43.3 percent from downtown. It was also the fourth time the Weevils have eclipsed the century mark for points this season tallying 114, a season-high.
It was the first time UAM has scored at least 110 points in a game since November 21, 2017 when it tallied a 110-59 victory over Texas College.
The game did start off a little slow for UAM trailing the Saints early in the first period. It wasn't until 6:03 left to play in the first half that the Weevils broke free. Trailing 28-26, Hardy got free and drained a triple off a nice dish from
Marcus Gilbert to give UAM a lead. Shortly after, Hardy hit another three to extend the lead, 34-30.
To close out the period, the Weevils went on a 19-3 run highlighted by some big buckets from
Justin Slocum, Hardy, Gilbert and King. To make it a 12-point game, Slocum hit a layup in the paint off a nice pass from
KJ Lesure. King followed that basket with a triple and Gilbert pushed the lead to 50-33 with 32 seconds left to play with a three of his own. Hardy hit a jumper off a fastbreak to conclude the period and the Weevils took a 53-33 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, it was Hardy again scoring points as he got to the line and hit two free throws. Later, he followed his missed jumper to get a nice put-back to make the lead 65-38.
The Weevils would later hit the century mark with five minutes to play when King got himself a steal and took it coast-to-coast for a fastbreak bucket making it 100-67 in favor of UAM.
UAM would later get some contributions from
Keyon Craddock,
Blakely Cobb and
Ndiaga Diop off the bench. Cobb would hit a three to make it 103-73, and Craddock would get to the line a little later for a free throw. The final UAM basket was a nice layup by Cobb in the paint.
Randall would hit a three in the closing seconds of the game, but the Weevils would go on to win the contest, 114-82.
Hardy led all scorers with 27 while also adding eight rebounds to his stat sheet. He was 5-of-8 from downtown.
King finished with 25 points after going 6-of-10 from deep and 9-of-13 from the floor.
Lesure only had five points from the field but dished out a team-high 11 assists.
Gilbert also added 13 points on the day while passing out eight assists.
The Weevils extend their win streak to seven games and improve to 7-1 on the season.
