MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team earned a pair of victories over Ouachita Baptist University Saturday from the Alvy Early Softball Field in Monticello, Arkansas in their home-opener. After a 5-1 win in game one, the Blossoms snagged another victory, 3-2, in game two.
UAM also opened Great American Conference play with the games, so the Blossoms are now 4-7 overall and 2-0 in league games.
GAME ONE: OBU 1, UAM 5
The Blossoms scattered runs across the first and third innings and received a solid performance in the circle from
Hayley McGhee to earn the game one win.
In the first,
Haley Cornell drove in
Katelynn Stamper via a bunt single to put UAM ahead, 1-0.
With McGhee cruising along, the Blossoms struck for four runs in the bottom of the third.
Kara DeBruin scored on an error, then
Sydney Webster stroked a two-RBI single to make it 4-0.
Sierra Gasca then drove in UAM's final run in the inning with a groundout, putting the Blossoms ahead, 5-0.
Ouachita added one run in the fourth, but could not make a comeback as McGhee held strong to pick up the victory.
McGhee (W, 1-2) hurled the complete game surrendering just one run on three hits and three walks while punching out a pair.
GAME TWO: OBU 2, UAM 3
In the second contest, UAM manufactured all three of their runs in the fourth and received another good performance out of a hurler in
Kaylee Freeman.
Skipping ahead to the fourth, the Blossoms put a few ducks on the pond.
Haley Godeaux then scored after getting on with a hit off a passed ball. A few batters later, with a couple of runners on, Stamper stroked a two-RBI double to make it a 3-0 Blossom advantage.
In the sixth, Ouachita chipped away a bit after a Leighton Withers homer and an RBI single from Hope Waid, but Freeman settled down. She then finished the sixth and set the Tigers down in order in the seventh to snag the win, 3-2.
Freeman (W, 1-1) threw the complete game allowing two runs on seven hits while punching out five batters.

UAM will look to conclude their four-game series with Ouachita on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
