MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State University at home on Friday from Weevils Field in Monticello, Arkansas, 10-7. The Weevils slugged 10 hits and had four home runs, while their bullpen kept the Bulldogs at bay to earn the win.
It looked a little bleak for the Weevils early on as SWOSU put together a string of hits in the top of the first and second innings to go ahead, 3-0.
UAM answered in the bottom of the second on a bases loaded walk that scored
Grant Shepherd.
Cade Thompson then was hit by a pitch to drive in
Audy Clary to make it 3-2.
The Weevils then exploded in the bottom of the third inning thanks to some gaudy power numbers. With the bases juiced for Clary, he deposited a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right-center for a grand slam (1) giving UAM a 6-3 lead. Two pitches later,
Austin Powell clubbed a ball over the right field wall (1) to go back-to-back with Clary making it 7-3 Weevils. Later in the inning, Thompson smoked a 2-2 pitch over the right-center field fence (1) to give the Weevils their third homer in the inning and sixth run, making it 8-3.
SWOSU worked its way back into the game in the top of the fourth with a trio of their own runs. However, the Weevils answered again in the bottom of the fourth when
David Reyna homered (1) over the right field wall to make it 9-6.
In the sixth, Reyna gave UAM its 10th run on a sacrifice fly scoring
Hudson Hopkins.
The Bulldogs added a run in the seventh but
Ojani Chacon (3-0) continued some solid work out of the pen limiting them to just that one run.
River Hunt later came in for the four-out save, and the Weevils went on to win, 10-7.
Chacon got the win coming out of the bullpen going 4.1 innings allowing one unearned run on three hits and three walks while punching out three.
Hunt (S, 2) got the save going 1.1 innings walking two batters and striking out two.
With the win, the Weevils improve to 7-7 overall and 5-2 in league games while SWOSU is 7-4 overall and 4-3 in conference contests.
