ALVA, Okla. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team lost a pair of contests at Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday from Alva, Oklahoma. After falling in game one, 10-3, the Weevils blew a two-run lead and the Rangers walked-off in the bottom of the seventh to win game two, 5-4.
With the losses, UAM falls to 8-11 overall and 6-6 in Great American Conference contests in the early part of the season.
GAME ONE: UAM 3, NWOSU 10
The Weevils got some solid at-bats from
Andrew Piraino as he paced the offense with three of their six hits, but their three runs were not enough as NWOSU tallied 10 in the victory.
After a run was scored in the bottom of the second, Piraino helped the Weevils answer with a solo shot (1) to left-center tying the game, 1-1.
Later in the game, with the Rangers had a four-run lead, but Piraino helped UAM cut into it. With
Austin Powell and
Cade Thompson on, Piraino roped a double to score them both.
Unfortunately, the Rangers kept scoring throughout the contest ended up winning the game, 10-3.
Livan Cordova (L, 2-2) took the loss going 5.0 innings allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits while striking out five.
GAME TWO: UAM 4, NWOSU 5
In game two, the Weevils got going early getting out to a lead.
Scoring got started in the top of the second as
Dylan Borman cranked a solo home run to left-center (3) to make it 1-0. Two batters later,
Grant Shepherd hit a solo got to put the Weevils out in front, 2-0.
The Weevils made it a four-run lead in the fifth when
David Reyna hit an RBI triple to score Piraino and Thompson.
The Rangers then got two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh they won the game via a walk-off walk, 5-4.
Mason Philley (L, 0-3) took the loss going 0.1 innings allowing one run on three walks.
