Weevils Tame Tigers

UAM uses a 17-4 run in the second half to take the lead and ultimately escape Arkadelphia with an 81-79 victory over Ouachita Baptist Saturday.

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - A 17-4 run in the second half by the University of Arkansas men's basketball team leads the Weevils (7-2, GAC 6-2) to the comeback road victory against Ouachita Baptist (1-5, GAC 1-4). UAM carried that momentum to hold off the Tigers for the 81-79 win Saturday afternoon.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle as the Weevils made up for a hot shooting half from downtown by Ouachita by capitalizing on turnovers. The Weevils forced 10 turnovers in the first half to the tune of 16 points.

UAM took its largest lead of the half on a 14-0 run accentuated by three forced turnovers turned into seven quick points to take a 24-15 lead with 8:55 to play. Ouachita would answer back and the teams traded buckets with the Tigers holding the lead 39-36 at the break.

The Weevils trailed for the first few minutes of the second half until a 17-4 run sparked by a fast break dunk by Denzel McDuffey. UAM took the lead on a Miles Daniels layup with 15:33 to play and would never relinquish the lead again. Alvarez Powell capped the run with a three from the left wing to give the Weevils a 58-49 lead.

OBU cut down the deficit to just three points with 8:57 to go, but UAM would hold off the Tigers by stretching the lead back to eight on a Kendal Frey triple with 1:11 left to play.

The Weevils ultimately put the game on ice knocking down 7-of-11 from the foul line in the final minute of the contest to win 81-79.

Frey paced UAM in scoring with 19 points, including four buckets from beyond the arc. Daniels and McDuffey ended in double digits as well with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Lemmie Howard finished with his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
