UAM Sinks SAU in Five Sets

The Blossoms battle back after dropping the second and third sets to take down Southern Arkansas in five sets Tuesday at Steelman Field House.

MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball rallied in the final two sets to top Southern Arkansas in five sets Tuesday at Steelman Field House. UAM dropped the second and third sets before taking set four and five to claim the 3-2 victory over SAU.

The Blossoms (2-2) controlled the first set from the start building an early 7-2 lead. SAU (0-4) would tighten the score up, but UAM was able to the Muleriders at arms length before closing the set on another 7-2 run to take the set 25-14.

SAU responded in the second, building its largest lead at 12-5, but UAM battled back to cut it down to 14-13 midway through the set. However, the Muleriders finished strong to take the second set 25-15.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair as the score was tied 17 separate times to go along with eight lead changes. UAM knotted the score late at 23 and 25 before SAU tallied the final two points to win the set 27-25.

The Blossoms came out on top of another tight affair in the fourth set tallying 18 kills to win the set 25-21 and send the match to a fifth and final set.

UAM fell behind early in the final set before closing on a 5-0 run to win the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.

Faith Wilemon and Isabelle Combs led the attack for the Blossoms tallying 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Four other players for UAM registered at least six kills as well.

Katie Pearson put on another strong performance setting up her teammates racking up 47 assists to go along with five digs.

Four players posted double-digit digs in the contest with Katelyn Richbourg leading the way tallying 16. Combs added 13 digs of her own while Kenzi Thornton and Amanda Toyota registered 10 each.

UP NEXT

UAM will makeup a rescheduled game against Henderson State Friday, Feb. 26. The teams were originally scheduled to meet last Tuesday, Feb. 16, but winter weather forced the game to be postponed. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
