MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team avoided a series sweep picking up the victory in game three against Arkansas Tech Saturday. The Weevils held off a ninth inning rally by the Wonder Boys to secure the 3-2 at Weevils Field.
With the win, UAM improves to 4-6 overall and 4-5 in Great American Conference play. ATU falls to 9-6 on the season and 7-2 in league contests.
After a quiet first inning for both clubs, UAM starter River Hunt left two runners stranded in the top of the second to keep the game scoreless. In the bottom of the frame the Weevils got on the board on an infield single by Joe Jaco that drove home Aaron Gaela from third base.
Hunt kept ATU scoreless in the third and fourth, but allowed a run to cross in the top of the fifth evening the score at 1-1.
UAM responded in the bottom half of the inning as Cade Thompson led off with a single and then stole second base. Hudson Hopkins followed with an RBI-double to left center to break the tie and put the Weevils up 2-1.
Ojani Chacon took over on the mound for UAM in the sixth. He allowed one runner to reach in the sixth before working out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the seventh to keep UAM on top.
The Weevils would add another run in the bottom of the seventh. Thompson opened the frame with a double to left field then two hitters later Jordan Johnson drove him in on a sacrifice fly to center.
Colby Adkins replaced Chacon to start the top of the eighth working a scoreless frame thanks to an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Adkins ran into trouble trying to close it out in the ninth starting with a two-out walk before giving up back-to-back singles allowing one run to score. The Weevils went back to the bullpen to get the final out bringing in Jared Roberts who recorded a three-pitch strikeout to close out the 3-2 win for UAM.
Hunt (W, 2-0) earned the win allowing just one run on four hits in five inning on the mound.
Chacon pitched two scoreless innings in relief while striking out three. Adkins gave up one run on four hits in 1.2 inning of relief work.
Roberts (S, 1) picked up the save after recording the final out and leave a pair of runners stranded.
Riyan Rodriguez (L, 1-3) took the loss surrendering two runs on six hits in four innings pitched.

The Weevils are back in action Tuesday as they hit the road to face Delta State in a midweek matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
