CLEVELAND, Miss. - A tough day at the plate for the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team leads to road loss to non-conference opponent Delta State Tuesday. The Weevils (4-7, 4-5 GAC) competed early, but could not keep pace with the DSU (7-10, 5-10) offense falling 12-2 in seven innings.
In the first inning UAM starter Trent Bunting worked around a two-out hit by pitch to keep the Statesmen scoreless. However another hit batter in the second proved costly for Bunting as the next hitter homered putting the Weevils down 2-0.
DSU added another run against Bunting in the third before he was replaced by Jared Roberts who managed to keep the deficit at 3-0 by leaving the bases loaded.
The Weevils worked a pair of walks to start the fourth before an RBI-single by Andrew Piraino and a sacrifice fly Aaron Gaela cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Statesmen responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run and then broke the game open with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. DSU added another run in the seventh to end the game with the Weevils ultimately falling 12-2.
Bunting (L, 0-1) ended with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in just 2.1 on the mound. UAM used four pitchers in relief with Roberts, Trent Clark, Ojani Chacon and Rigell Robinson each recording at least one out.
Kris Peet (W, 1-0) earned the win dealing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.
