Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team earned a series win against Henderson State, but fell shy of picking up the sweep dropping the series finale Sunday. The Weevils put 10 hits on the board in the contest, but couldn't manage to push those runners across the plate dropping the contest 5-1 on the road.
UAM (3-3, 3-3 GAC) started the game on the attack with three hits in the top of the first including an RBI-single by Andrew Piraino to give the Weevils the early 1-0 lead.
HSU (6-3, 4-2 GAC) wasted no time responding with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the frame and then adding two more on three hits in the second inning.
The Weevils made a change on the mound in the third bringing in Mason Philley to replace starter Livan Cordova.
Philley dealt back-to-back scoreless innings before surrendering a run in the fifth to put UAM down 5-1.
The bats went quiet for the Weevils until the top of the ninth. The first two hitters of the frame singled as UAM tried to mount a comeback in the final inning. The Weevils loaded the bases with a walk, but then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game losing 5-1.
Seven different Weevils registered a hit in the contest with Piraino, Jordan Johnson and Grant Shepherd each tallying two hits each.
Cordova (L, 1-1) took the loss for UAM surrendering four runs on five hits in two innings on the mound. Philley dealt six innings in relief allowing one unearned run on just four hits.
Spencer Taack (W, 2-1) earned the win going five innings on the mound while giving up one run on seven hits.
