Two Big Innings Push Blossoms to Series Sweep

The UAM softball team cruises to a series sweep over Oklahoma Baptist thanks to a pair of explosive offensive innings Saturday. The Blossoms put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the second and third en route to the 14-2 win in five innings.

MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team cruised to a game three victory to clinch the series sweep over Oklahoma Baptist after erupting for all of its runs in just two innings Saturday. The Blossoms put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard in both the second and third innings en route to the 14-2 win in five innings.

UAM improves to 12-22 overall on the season and 11-19 in Great American Conference play while OBU falls to 19-18 and 14-16.

The first two hitters of the game reached base against Maddie Chalenburg before the Bison punched the first run across the plate on a sacrifice fly. Haley Godeaux and Chalenburg combined shut down any other scoring chance catching a runner trying to steal second and inducing a groundout to end the frame.

The Blossoms got the offense rolling in the home half of the second despite the first two hitters of the frame being retired. Hannah Holdbrook knocked a single up the middle before Haley Cornell gave UAM the lead on a two-run blast to left center. Sierra Gasca and Madison Morrissey followed with two-out singles. During the next at bat the Blossoms executed a double steal that forced an errant throw that allowed Gasca to score. Bailey Camp and Grace Neal picked up back-to-back RBI-singles to finish off the big frame and put UAM up 5-1.

OBU managed to respond for one run in the third, but Chalenburg escaped any further damage leaving two runners stranded on base.

In the third, UAM put the game away erupting for nine runs in the frame. The Blossoms loaded the bases with one out before Madison Gardiner, Morrissey and Katelynn Stamper each picked up an RBI on two hit batters and a walk. Camp followed with an RBI single up the middle. UAM then capitalized on a pair of OBU errors to score on the next two at bats. Still with one out in the inning Summer Perkins picked up an RBI and reached on a fielder's choice. Holdbrook followed with an RBI-groundout before Cornell capped the big inning with an RBI-single to the shortstop.

Chalenburg returned to the circle to finish off the game working around base runners in the fourth and fifth to hold OBU without another run. UAM ultimately won 14-2 in five innings to secure a series sweep over the Bison.

Eight different Blossoms collected at least one hit with Cornell, Camp and Holdbrook leading the way with two hits each. Cornell picked up three RBI in the game to lead UAM while Camp added two.

Chalenburg (W, 3-8) earned the win dealing 5.0 innings in the circle allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out four.
