MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Southwestern Oklahoma State Friday to extend its winning streak to five games. The Blossoms ended both games by sending home runs out to left center field to win each game 8-0 at Alvy Early Softball Field.
UAM improves to 14-22 overall on the season and 13-19 in Great American Conference play while SWOSU drops to 9-25 and 9-20.
GAME ONE: UAM 8, SWOSU 0
After dealing two scoreless innings to open the game, Jamie Franks ran into a jam in the third. The first three hitters reached on singles to load the bases, but Franks responded with back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to hold the Bulldogs without a run.
In the fourth the Kennedale, Texas product worked around a pair of two-out hits to keep SWOSU off the scoreboard again.
The Bulldogs threatened one more time against Franks in the fifth inning loading the bases with one out. UAM decided to make a call to the bullpen to get out of the frame bringing Alexis Pevehouse into the circle. Pevehouse promptly induced a pair of ground balls to get out of the inning with the score still tied 0-0.
In the home half of the frame the offense came to life for the Blossoms. Three-straight singles by Haley Godeaux, Summer Perkins and Hannah Holdbrook loaded the bases for UAM to start the inning. In the next at bat, Haley Cornell brought home the game's first run reaching on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. Madison Gardiner was then hit by a pitch before Madison Morrissey knocked a two-run single through the right side. Katelynn Stamper followed with an RBI-single up the middle and Bailey Camp drove home another run reaching on a fielder's choice to make the score 5-0. Two hitters later in her second at bat of the frame Godeaux capped the big inning with a two-run single up the middle.
Pevehouse carried on the shutout for the Blossoms retiring SWOSU in order in the sixth.
Cornell decided to end the game an inning early launching a leadoff home run over the right field fence to deliver UAM the 8-0 win in six innings.
The Blossoms were led by Godeaux at the plate in game one as she went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Cornell and Morrissey each added a pair of RBI as well.
Pevehouse (W, 3-4) earned the win dealing 1.2 scoreless in relief while striking out two.
Franks worked 4.1 innings without allowing a run and struck out four in the start for UAM.
Alisa Friesen (L, 2-6) took the loss giving up seven runs on six hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
GAME TWO: UAM 8, SWOSU 0
The momentum in the circle and at the plate carried over to the second game of the day for the Blossoms.
Pevehouse worked a 1-2-3 frame in the first with a pair of punch outs to open game two.
In the bottom of the inning the UAM offense kept rolling as Stamper and Camp both came around to score on a throwing error by the Bulldogs.
The Blossom added two more runs in the third on an RBI-double by Stamper and a sacrifice fly by Grace Neal.
In the circle, Pevehouse continued to make quick work of SWOSU holding the Bulldogs hitless until a leadoff double in the fifth. The hit did not phase the Melissa, Texas native as she retired the next three hitters to keep SWOSU scoreless.
UAM tacked on another run in the fifth when a double steal by Sierra Gasca and Morrissey forced a throwing error that allowed Gasca to race home.
The Blossoms started the home half of the sixth with a double by Godeaux and a walk by Perkins to set the table for Holdbrook. The sophomore closed out the doubleheader sweep sending her long ball of the season over the fence in left center for a three-run shot to end game two in the sixth inning with UAM winning 8-0.
Stamper paced the UAM offense going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Holdbrook added three RBI with a home run and Neal tacked on two RBI of her own.
Pevehouse (W, 4-4) picked up the win in the shutout allowing just one hit and striking out four in six innings pitched.
Brianna Cryer (L, 2-6) ended with the loss surrendering eight runs on six hits in 5.0 innings in the circle.
UP NEXT
UAM goes for its sixth-consecutive win and the series sweep Saturday against SWOSU. First pitch is scheduled for noon. The Blossoms will also honor their seniors prior to the game at 11:30 a.m.
