Box Score 2 WEATHERFORD, Okla. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team picked up a doubleheader split on the road against SWOSU Friday. The Weevils dropped a slugfest in game one 12-10 before coming from behind to top the Bulldogs 6-5 in extra innings in game two.
UAM moves to 20-17 overall on the season and 18-14 in Great American Conference play while SWOSU is now 21-16 and 17-15.
GAME ONE: SWOSU 12, UAM 10
The Weevils' offense was rolling in early in the series opener against the Bulldogs. Jordan Johnson and Dylan Borman put UAM in front 4-0 in the top of the first inning launching back-to-back blasts. The offense did not stop there as Cole Muckleroy and Cade Thompson delivered back-to-back RBI singles later in the frame putting six runs on the board for the Weevils in their first at bat.
SWOSU began to slowly chip away against Mason Philley on the mound. The lefty faced a lot of traffic on the base paths as the Bulldogs scored two in the first, one in the second and four in the third before UAM made a pitching change. Livan Cordova took over on the bump for the Weevils to escape the third inning with a one-run deficit after recording the final out of the frame to leave the bases loaded.
Aaron Gaela and Hudson Hopkins worked back-to-back walks to begin the fifth inning setting up a chance for UAM to retake the lead. A sacrifice bunt by Audy Clary advanced the runners to second and third. Grant Shepherd tied the contest with a sacrifice fly to center field before Muckleroy put the Weevils back in front 8-7 with an RBI-double.
In the next inning Johnson crushed his second long ball of the game sending a solo shot over the wall in left field to put UAM up two.
With Cordova still working on the mound for the Weevils, SWOSU responded in the bottom of the sixth scoring three runs on two hit to take the lead.
UAM turned to Ojani Chacon out of the bullpen to start the seventh inning, but he was unable to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard allowing one run in the seventh and another in the eighth pushing the Weevils' deficit to 12-9.
Borman attempted to start a rally for UAM in the top of the ninth leading off the frame with his second home run of the game. Two hitters later Hudson Hopkins brought the tying run to the plate after singling into left field, but he was left stranded as the next two batters were retired. The Weevils ultimately dropped game one of the twin bill 12-10.
Johnson and Borman led the UAM offense each launching a pair of home runs with the former driving four runs and the latter adding two RBI.
Cordova (L, 3-3) took the loss for the Weevils giving up three runs on three hits while striking out three in 3.1 innings.
Philley worked 2.2 innings in the start allowing seven runs, four earned, on seven hits and six walks.
Chacon surrendered two runs on five hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
Dakota Jones (W, 4-1) picked up the win for SWOSU allowing three runs in 5.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen.
Ryan Hildner (S, 3) earned the save giving up one run over the final three innings of the game.
GAME TWO: UAM 6, SWOSU 5 (8 Inn.)
UAM was first one the scoreboard in the second game of the day after a leadoff double by Gaela and a wild pitch set up a dropped fly ball off the bat of Andrew Piraino that scored the first run.
In the bottom half of the frame the Bulldogs got the run back with one hit and capitalizing on an error by the Weevils.
River Hunt sat SWOSU down in order in the next inning before running into trouble in the bottom of the third. Three walks and a pair of hits allowed the Bulldogs to push four runs across the plate to take a 5-1 lead after three innings.
Hopkins and Nick Fakouri cut the deficit in half with back-to-back solo home runs to lead off the next frame.
The Weevils tacked on another run in the top of the fifth on a two-out RBI-single by Clary to drive home Borman.
Hunt settled in a bit on the bump holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the fourth and fifth before UAM turned to the bullpen in the sixth.
Jared Roberts took over on the mound to keep SWOSU off the board despite surrendering a pair of hits in the bottom of the sixth.
Borman launched a game-tying blast in the top of the seventh to even the score 5-5.
A 1-2-3 inning by Roberts in the next frame sent the second game of the doubleheader into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth a one-out double by Muckleroy set the table for Piraino to put the Weevils back on top with an RBI-single.
SWOSU worked a pair of walks against Roberts in the bottom of the inning, but the 6'5" reliever closed the door stranding both runners to secure the 6-5 win for UAM.
Borman, Hopkins and Fakouri led the offensive attack in game two each launching a home run.
Roberts (W, 3-0) earned the win dealing 3.0 scoreless innings and striking out four.
Hunt worked 5.0 innings in his start allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits.
Haden Branch (L, 1-3) took the loss surrendering two runs in 3.0 innings on the mound.
UP NEXT
UAM will go for the series win Saturday in game three against SWOSU. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
