MONTICELLO, Ark. - Great American Conference baseball returns in less than a week and the UAM Boll Weevils are ready to take on the 2022 season.
The Weevils are BACK in action for the 2022 D2 baseball season! Opening up their season on Tuesday, Feb. 1st at the University of West Alabama. UAM is coming off a (19-14) conference and a (22-18) overall record season in 2021. The Weevils placed 5th in the Great American Conference in 2021, being eliminated by Arkansas Tech 4-3 in the semifinals of the GAC tournament.
Familiar Faces - Some familiar faces are returning for the Weevils as key players, both in the line-up and on the mound. Among the players to look out for this season include:
River Hunt - A senior RHP voted 1st Team ALL-GAC and 2nd Team All-Central Region by both ABCA/Rawlings and the D2CCA in the 2021 season. Hunt posted a team and league leading 9-0 perfect record with a 3.52 ERA. His .201 batting average against led GAC starting pitchers.
Jordan Johnson - A senior INF voted 1st Team ALL-GAC and 2nd Team All-Central Region in the 2021 season. Johnson enters the season already owning the league's all-time record for RBI. He needs three home runs, 55 hits, 48 runs and 89 total bases to break the records currently held by former SAU Mulerider All-American Trevor Rucker. Jordan is going into his 6th season as a Weevil, courtesy of the canceled 2020 COVID-Season.
Mason Philley - A junior LHP voted 2nd Team ALL-GAC in the 2021 season. Philley led the Weevil pitching staff with 90 strikeouts, ranked as the second-best total in the conference.
Grant Shepherd - A senior OF voted Honorable Mention All-GAC in the 2021 season. Grant Shepherd also heads into his 6th season as a Weevil, courtesy of the canceled 2020 COVID-Season.
Other returning seniors include: Hudson Hopkins, Nick Fakouri, Trevor Rugg, and David Reyna.
New Faces - The Weevils add a few newcomers to the field this season with the addition of: Seniors Clay Lockett and Spencer Johnston, as well as sophomores Jacob McDaniel, Charles Peacock, Lewis Johnson, and Orlando Arevalo.
Pre-Season Poll - In the 2022 GAC Pre-Season Poll the UAM Boll Weevils were voted 4th overall.
