UAM Falls to Central Missouri in Game 1 of the Houston Astros Winter Invitational

Houston, Tex. – Eight runs scored throughout the first 4 innings helped Central Missouri top Arkansas-Monticello baseball, 9-4, in game one of the Houston Astros Winter Classic at Minute Maid Park on Friday.

Central Missouri was the first to score, putting up three runs in the bottom of first inning. UAM would respond with a run of their own in the top of the second, but the Mules put together two more in the bottom half of the inning to gain a 5-1 lead going into the third. UCM would strike again in the bottom of the fourth, tacking on three more runs to their lead over the Weevils. The final run of the game was scored in the bottom of the eighth, with the match finishing in Central Missouri's favor, 9-4. The Mules out hit the Weevils, recording 15 hits on the day, in comparison to Monticello's 8.

Hudson Hopkins led the offense, going 3-for-3 on the game. The senior hit his first home run of the season to left in the second inning, followed by two doubles, three RBIs and two runs of his own scored.

Pitching Performances
The UAM pitching staff had its work cut out for them, totaling eight different pitchers in the game. Derek Potts started on the mound, totaling 4.0 inning pitched with eight runs allowed on twelve hits. The right-hander stuck out two batters and had one walk, unfortunately taking the loss. Defensively, the Weevils struggled behind Potts, putting 6 errors on the board.

Trent Bunting would enter the game in the bottom of the fifth, tallying 2.0 innings pitched with zero runs allowed on one hit. The right-hander also struck out two batters and had one walk.

Jacob McDaniel closed the game out on the mound for the Weevils, entering in the bottom of the seventh, throwing 2.0 innings with 1 runs allowed on two hits. He would strike out two batters and walk only one.

The loss drops Arkansas-Monticello to 2-1 on the season and gives the Weevils something to shake off before they continue this weekend's tournament.
