MONTICELLO, Ark. – The
Arkansas-Monticello baseball team traveled to Alva, Oklahoma for their first game of a three game, Great American Conference series with Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The Weevils were unable to hold on to the lead they had built as they fall in Game one, 6-4.
UAM held a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but ultimately dropped the series opener against NWOSU by a score of 6-4 in 9 innings Saturday in Alva, Oklahoma.
Northwestern Oklahoma State scored 5 runs in the bottom of the seventh and held on to that lead for the remaining 2 innings.
The Weevils were the first to score, posting 2 runs in the top of the first. The rally started with a
Chase Cripps single, followed by a home run from
Cade Thompson. The two teams would head into the bottom of the first with a 2-1 lead over the Rangers. NWOSU would follow up with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
UAM would score their third run of the ball game in the top of the sixth inning.
David Reyna shot a lead off single up the middle to start the momentum. Reyna would steal second and advance to third on an error from the catcher, eventually scoring on an error by the center fielder.
The top of the seventh inning saw another run on the board for Monticello.
Chase Cripps lead the inning off with a double to left center.
Cade Thompson bunted for a single and Cripps would advance to third, followed by a SAC fly from
Jordan Johnson to score another run. The Rangers would score five runs in the bottom half of the inning., taking a 6-4 lead over the Weevils. The match would conclude after the final two innings without another run scored.
Pitching Performances
The UAM pitching staff had its work cut out for them, totaling five different pitchers in the game.
Derek Potts started on the mound, totaling 6.1 dominant innings pitched. The right-hander struck out five batters and had four walks. Defensively, the Weevils put up 5 errors on the board behind him.
Trent Bunting would enter the game in the bottom of the seventh, tallying 1.2 innings pitched with one run allowed on one hit. He struck out two batters and had one walk.
The loss drops Arkansas-Monticello to 3-6 on the season and 1-3 in GAC play.
