Johnson Breaks GAC Home Run Record as Weevils Drop NWOSU Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALVA. – The Weevils Baseball team drops their final two matches to close out their GAC series with Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday. UAM would play two high scoring games on Sunday, falling in first 12-11 in nine innings, and again in the second 14-12, with an incredible display of offense.

Ove the years, many baseball players have passed through UAM. Many of them enjoying the time spent playing at Weevils Field or the memories that they have made. But among all of those past Weevils, there's only a handful that have truly taken being a Boll Weevil to heart. When it comes to Jordan Johnson, being a Boll Weevil is everything. After six short years and 43 moon shots later, Johnson has broken the all time Great American Conference record for career home runs, hitting his 43rd in Game 3 of their NWOSU series. The shot being, "an absolute bomb" over the scoreboard, according to the Northwestern announcer.

In Game 1, UAM took the lead early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Chase Cripps was hit by a pitch and Cade Thompson walked, both moving their way around the base path before scoring on a ground out from Jordan Johnson, and a single from Hudson Hopkins.

The Weevils would put up 3 more runs in the top of the second. Trevor Rugg reached first on a fielder's choice, moving to second after Grant Shepherd was walked. A single to left from Cade Thompson would score Rugg and advance Shepherd to third. After stealing second, Thompson would score alongside Shepherd of a Jordan Johnson single up the middle.

The Rangers would score two runs of their own in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-2 ballgame.

Monticello put up another 3 piece in the fourth top make it an 8-2 game heading into the bottom half of the inning. This is when NWOSU would make there move, scoring 8 runs in the fourth, taking back the lead, 10-8.

Nick Fakouri would score on a SAC bunt from Grant Shepherd on an error from the third baseman. Rugg would score on a fly out from Cripps to make it a10-10 game. The Rangers would score another run to make it an 11-10 score.

The Weevils would score their final run in the top of the ninth, but fall as Northwestern would score the winning run in bottom half, winning the match, 12-11.

Charles Peacock started on the mound for the Weevils, posting 2.0 scoreless innings with 2 strikeouts, allowing only 2 hits and a walk. Mason Philley entered the game in the third, getting 3.0 innings thrown, allowing 11 runs on 6 hits and 11 errors behind him. Rigell Robinson came into the game as the final pitcher of the match, finishing out the game with 3.1 innings pitched and one run allowed on two hits.

Game 2 started with an early rally from both teams as there was 2 runs scored apiece in the first inning. UAM scored first after a Chase Cripps double, followed by a Cade Thompson single. A Clay Lockett Single scored Thompson, The Rangers would answer with 2 runs of their own. Fakouri, Shepherd, and Thompson would all score in the second to give Monticello a 5-2 lead.

NWOSU would score 8 runs over the third and fourth innings, compared to the 1 UAM put up on a solo Jordan Johnson home run.

The Rangers would score 4 more runs in the sixth inning. The Weevils would tack on 6 runs in the top of the seventh, but it would prove not enough as they would eventually fall 14-12.

Spencer Johnston started Game 2, dishing out 3.2 innings of work. He struck out four, allowing twelve hits and only 10 runs with 10 errors. Trevor Bunting was next on the bump, tossing 1.2 inning of work himself. He would allow 3 runs on only 2 hits. Jacob McDaniel was the third pitcher for UAM, throwing only 0.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 1 hit. Cameron Johnson was the final pitcher, tallying 0.1 innings as well.

The 0-3 series pushes Arkansas-Monticello to 3-8 on the season and gives the Weevils something to strive for in their next GAC match-up.
