Weevils come up short in mid-week match with the Statesmen

Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team had a mid-week match-up with Delta State University on Tuesday afternoon. The Weevils started out slow, but climbed their way back as the game went on. UAM would unfortunately fall to the Statesmen, 6-5.

The Statesmen were the first to score, putting up a run in the top of the first, another in the fourth, and four more runs in the top of the sixth. Taking a 6-0 lead through seven innings.

UAM would find their stride in the bottom of the eighth inning. Grant Shepherd lead off the inning with a home run to right center, followed by a Chase Cripps single to left center. Cripps eventually scored on a Jordan Johnson single to center field.

The Weevils scored three more runs in the bottom of the ninth. Chase Cripps reached first on an error, followed by three consecutive walks would score the first run of the inning. Jordan Johnson and Cade Thompson wpuld score on a Clay Lockett single to left field to shorten the Delta State lead to 6-5. It would prove to be not enough as Monticello would close out the game 6-5.

Pitching Performances
The UAM pitching staff had its work cut out for them, totaling four different pitchers in the game.

Cameron Johnson started on the mound, totaling 2.2 inning pitched with one run allowed on one hit. The right-hander stuck out five batters and had one walks.
Jack Barna would enter the game in the top of the third, tallying 1.1 inning pitched with one run allowed on one hit. He also struck out two batters and had one walks.
Charles Peacock took his turn on the mound in the top of the fifth, throwing 1.0 inning with 4 runs allowed. He had 3 walks and 2 HBPs.
Jacob McDaniel would close out the last two innings of the game for the Weevils, entering in the top of the eighth. The right-hander would put up two strike outs and one walk while allowing one hit.

Showcased Offense

Clay Lockett - Went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.
Joprdan Johnson - Went 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
Grant Shepherd - Went 1-for-3 with a home run to right center and a stole base.
Reece Reading - Went 1-for-3 with a double.

The loss drops Arkansas-Monticello to 3-9 on the season.

Up Next
Arkansas-Monticello are to host Henderson State University in a three game, Great American Conference series. The Weevils will play the first game of the series on Friday, March 4. The game is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
