MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men's Basketball team hosted in-state conference member Harding University at Steelman Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. The Weevils came out with a 81-77 win over the Bisons.
Isaac Jackson led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (3-5, 1-2 GAC) with 23 points, going 8-18 on total field goals, 1-1 from beyond-the-arc, and 6-7 from the free throw line. He also contributed three offensive and two defensive rebounds on top of three steals and an assist in his 39 minutes played.
Zane Nelson followed close behind, contributing 21 points of his own throughout the game, hitting 7-13 field goals, 1-3 threes, and also 6-7 free throws with five rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
Josh Denton was the final Boll Weevil in double digits on the afternoon, posting 13 points. Denton was 3-4 from short range and 1-2 from deep with 4-5 free throws hit. He also gave UAM two rebounds and two steals.
Harding was led by
Keyln McBride with 16 points, respectfully.
The Weevils were the first on the board, but saw the Bisons regain control of the lead as the half continued. A three from
Mario Fantina helped Monticello chip away at the Harding lead. Issac Jackson led the charge as he drained a key layup, followed by a three from
Zae Wiggins to make it a three point game. Issac Jackson brought the Weevils back within one after going 2-2 from the line.
Zane Nelson gave UAM a 40-39 advantage late in the half on a jumper. After an exciting first half the teams head to the locker room with UAM on top, 44-41.
The second 20 minutes saw another aggressive display of basketball between the two teams. After seeing the lead change four times throughout the half, the Weevil defense continued to hold off the Bisons' offense. The UAM offense stretched the lead with a layup from Alex Brogden. Harding tied the game up 70-70 with two minutes left on the clock.
Isaac Jackson eventually gave Monticello their final go-ahead points of the game on an and-1 layup with 59 seconds on the clock. The Weevils held on to the lead for the remainder of the half, eventually taking the win, 81-77.
Arkansas-Monticello committed 10 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
