MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men's Basketball team traveled to Magnolia, Arkansas to take on Great American Conference rival Southern Arkansas University on Monday evening. The Boll Weevils came out of their eighteenth GAC match-up of the 2022-23 season with an 69-64 WIN over the Muleriders.
Isaac Jackson once again led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (10-14, 6-12 GAC) with an incredible UAM career-high 27 points in his Monday evening performance against the Muleriders. Jackson shot 9-22 on field goals, 3-7 on shots from beyond-the-arc, and hit 6-7 free throws. He also contributed four defensive rebounds on top of an assist and a steal.
Mario Fantina posted 13 points for the Weevil in his Monday evening performance. Fantina shot 6-14 on field goals, 4-10 on shots from beyond-the-arc, and hit 2-2 free throws. He also contributed five rebounds on top of two assists and two steals.
Ray Price and Cole Anderson were the final Boll Weevils scoring double-digits on Monday, posting 10 points each. Price was 3-6 on field goals for UAM, going 2-3 from beyond-the-arc with two free throws. He also contributed a team-leading eight rebounds on top of five assists. Anderson was 3-4 on field goals and 4-6 from the free throw line with a three rebounds and three steals.
Southern Arkansas (17-7, 13-5 GAC) was led by
Jerry Carraway Jr. with a 13 point performance.
The opening 20 minutes of the game began with Arkansas-Monticello finding the first points of the match as
Mario Fantina put in a layup for the Weevils. The remainder of the half would prove to be a back and forth battle between the two teams, with the lead being swapped five separate times throughout its entirety. The first half of the rivalry match-up would come to a close with Arkansas-Monticello shooting for 38.46% on field goals compared to Southern Arkansas' 31.25% on the half. The teams would head to the locker room with the Weevils leading, 26-25.
The second half began with a three from both Isaac Jackson and Ray Price, but the Weevils were met with the Muleriders' will to win. The score would see multiple ties as well as lead swaps for a majority of the second 20 minute period. With 6:28 left on the clock, UAM would pull ahead of SAU and hold on to that lead for the remainder of the game. The match would come to a close with a Boll Weevil victory as UAM would take down their rival SAU team with a final score of 69-64.
Arkansas-Monticello committed only 11 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Weevils return to Steelman Field House on Thursday, February 16 when they host Great American Conference member Oklahoma Baptist University. The match will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
