Weevils Rally Back for 60-57 Win Over Southwestern Oklahoma

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men's Basketball team hosted Great American Conference member Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday afternoon. The Boll Weevils rallied back, coming out of their fifteenth GAC match-up of the 2022-23 season with an 60-57 win over the Bulldogs.

Isaac Jackson led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (8-13, 4-11 GAC) as the lone Weevil in double digits with 21 points in his Saturday evening performance. Jackson shot 8-15 field goals, 1-2 on shots from beyond-the-arc, and hit 4-5 free throws. He also contributed one offensive and four defensive rebounds on top of two assists.
 
Southwestern Oklahoma (10-11, 6-9 GAC) was led by Ben Smith with a 17 point performance.

The opening 20 minutes of the match began with nearly two minutes of game time ticking by before a point was scores. Isaac Jackson and Cole Anderson scored back-to-back to give UAM the early 4-point advantage. The Bulldogs would soon respond with an 11-2 run to reclaim the lead. The score would bounce back and forth between the two before leaning strongly towards the visiting Southwestern Oklahoma team. The first half would come to a close with Arkansas-Monticello trailing for the last third, shooting for 38.4% on field goals compared to the Bulldogs 57% on the half. The teams would head to the locker room with the Bulldogs on top 42-26.

The second half of the game proved to be a flip-flop of the first half, with the Weevils showcasing full control of the second 20 minutes. The Weevils were the first to score in the second half as Ray Price hit a three after receiving a pass from Anderson. With 3:47 left on the clock, Isaac Jackson put in a fast break layup and Arkansas-Monticello found themselves with the lead. The Boll Weevils had climbed their way back from a 16-point SWOSU advantage. As the second half continued, UAM would continue to fight for control of the lead. The match would come to a close with Jackson scoring the final points of the game, giving Arkansas-Monticello a 60-57 lead as he UAM snagged the final rebound as time ran out.

Arkansas-Monticello committed only 10 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Weevils return to the court on Thursday, February 9 when they travel to Ada, Oklahoma to take on Great American Conference member East Central University. The match will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
