UAM Completes Sweep Over SAU With 67-61 Victory

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men's Basketball continued on with conference play on Thursday afternoon when they hosted conference rival Southern Arkansas University. The Weevils came out with a 67-61 victory over the Muleriders.

Zane Nelson led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (8-8, 6-5 GAC) with 28 points, going 9-13 on total field goals, 3-5 from beyond-the-arc, and 7-9 from the line. Nelson also contributed seven defensive rebounds, four assists, and three steals in his 40 minutes of play.

Isaac Jackson followed close behind, posting 25 points of his own for the Boll Weevils. Jackson hit 10-19 total field goals, 1-2 threes, and 4-5 shots from the line while grabbing two defensive rebounds and dishing out one assist on the evening.

Southern Arkansas (7-10, 5-6 GAC) was led by Carel Ray Jr. with 13 points.

The Muleriders were the first team on the board, scoring on their second possession on the game. After tying up the game three separate times throughout the first 10 minutes of the game, the Weevils saw their first lead on a jumper from Zane Nelson. The lead was short lived, with the visiting rival retaking the lead, minus a fourth tie, for the remainder of the opening 20 minutes. The teams went to the locker room with SAU leading, 34-32.

The second half was all about a comeback for the Weevils scratching away, and eventually overcoming the Mulerider lead. Throughout its entirety, the teams saw seven different changes of the lead and three draws before the Boll Weevils took back the advantage for the remainder of the half. Two free throws from Isaac Jackson with five seconds remaining sealed the deal, leading to a 67-61 Monticello win over their rival, Southern Arkansas.

Arkansas-Monticello committed 12 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
