KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team closed the Central Region Challenge on Sunday against Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Weevils came out of the contest with a 58-42 loss.
Head Coach Chap Tapp said this on the weekend:
"The weekend was good for us to get to play two really good teams. I thought we showed improvement today on the defensive end from Saturday to hold the #4 team in the country to under 40% field goal percentage, 25% in the second half, and only 21 points in the second half. We have to get a lot better at some things, but it's better to play really good teams and be tested, have film to teach with, and an opportunity to get better. You don't get that playing bad teams. I still think our best basketball is going to be played in January and February."
Newcomer
Seth Grandberry once again led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (0-2), posting 19 points in the game. Grandberry hit 8-17 field goals on the day, with 1-5 threes made and 2-4 free throws. He also contributed five rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Harouna Sissoko was the second Boll Weevil in double-digits, scoring 10 points of his own. Sissoko hit 4-7 field goals and 2-3 shots from range while grabbing four rebounds. He also had one block and one assist.
MSU-Moorhead (2-0) was led by
Jacob Jennissen with 18 points.
The first half of the game was primarily led by the Moorhead offense, striking first to take a quick 7-0 lead. The Weevils eventually got on the board, but trailed the Dragons, 20-6. UAM shot for 41.67% in the first compared to Moorhead's 56%. The teams were sent to the locker room with Monticello trailing, 37-23.
The second 20-minute period proved evenly match, as Monticello was only outscored 21-19. The Dragons saw an 18-point lead on two separate occasions in the second half, eventually taking the game, 58-42.
Arkansas-Monticello committed 10 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
