Men's Basketball Drop Season Opener to Bemidji State

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team began its 2024-25 campaign against Bemidji State University on Saturday in the Central Region Challenge, hosted by Pittsburg State University. The Weevils lost 64-55 to open the year.

Newcomer Seth Grandberry led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (0-1) as the only Boll Weevil in double-digits, posting 13 points in the game. Grandberry hit 5-15 total field goals on the day, with two three-pointers made and 1-2 free throws. He also contributed two steals, a defensive rebound, and an assist in his 37 minutes.
 
Bemidji State (1-1) was led by Malang Athian with 19 points.

The opening half was won by Bimidji, as they outscored UAM 38-29. Newcomer Noah Thomas scored the first points of the season for Arkansas-Monticello on a three to give the Boll Weevils an early lead. Alex Brogdon gave UAM a 10-4 lead on a three of his own as Monticello saw its highest advantage of the game. The Beavers responded with seven straight points to retake the lead but once again fell behind as the Boll Weevils outscored them 17 points to seven. The remainder of the half saw only two more points for UAM, coming on a layup from Devin Davis. Bemidji State went from being down 27-18 to leading 38-29 as the teams left for the locker room at the half.

The second 20-minute period proved evenly match, as both teams came out with 26 points scored. The Beavers increased their lead to a game-high 15 points with 3:18 on the clock, but saw UAM fight back, decreasing it to nine as the game came to a close. Monticello came out with a 64-55 loss to open the season.

Arkansas-Monticello committed 14 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Weevils return to action on Sunday, November 10, to take on Minnesota State University - Moorhead in the Central Region Challenge. The game is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m.
