Weevils Can't Hold on, Drop East Central Match-Up in Final Moments

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men's Basketball continued with conference play on Saturday afternoon when they hosted out-of-state conference member East Central University. The Weevils came out with a 55-53 loss to the Tigers.

Isaac Jackson led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (9-12, 7-9 GAC) with 16 points, going 6-16 on total field goals and 4-4 from the line. Jackson also contributed two rebounds and one assist in his 40 minutes of play.

Zane Nelson followed close behind, contributing 13 points of his own throughout the game, hitting 5-18 field goals, 1-6 threes, and also 2-3 free throws with nine rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Ty'Reonn King was the final Boll Weevil in double digits on the afternoon, posting 10 points. King was 4-8 from short range and 2-6 from deep. He also gave UAM three rebounds.
 
East Central (10-12, 6-10 GAC) was led by Keyon Thomas with 17 points.

The first half of the game proved to be dominated by the home team throughout its entirety. Although the Tigers were the first on the board, after closely trailing behind, a layup from Ty'Reonn King pushed UAM ahead of ECU for the remainder of the opening 20 minutes. Arkansas-Monticello shot for 46.4% on field goals in the half, compared to East Central's 33.3%. The teams would head to the locker rooms with UAM on top, 31-21.

The second 20 minutes started off with the Tigers chipping away at the Weevils lead, seeing ECU tie up the game three times in the final seven minutes. Arkansas-Monticello shot for 25% on field goals in the half, compared to East Central's 56.5%. The remainder of the half was an intense fight to the final seconds. The Weevils would conclude the game with a 55-53 loss to the Tigers. 

Arkansas-Monticello committed 11 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Weevils return to Steelman Fieldhouse on Thursday, Feb. 15th when they travel to face off against conference rival Southern Arkansas University. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
