Blossoms Drop Heartbreaker to Rival SAU

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Women's Basketball team traveled to face rival conference member, Southern Arkansas University on Thursday evening. The Blossoms came out with a 72-76 loss to the Muleriders. 

Bailey Harris was the leading scorer for Arkansas-Monticello (7-16, 3-14 GAC) with 19 points, going 8-13 on total field goals, 1-1 on threes, and 2-3 on shots from the free throw line. Harris also contributed four rebounds, three assists and a steal in her 37 minutes. 

Azaria Hulbert followed close behind, posting 18 points of her own on the game. She hit 7-10 field goals and 4-6 three pointers while giving the Blossoms two defensive rebounds and a steal.

Alindsey Long and Haleigh Crews were the final Blossoms in double digits, scoring 15 and 11 points against the Muleriders, respectfully. Long hit 6-10 field goals and 3-5 three pointers with four rebounds, three assists, and a steal on the day. Crews hit 4-6 field goals and 3-3 shots from the line with five rebounds and three assists. 
 
Southern Arkansas (12-11, 7-10 GAC) was led by Qua Chambers with 21 points.

The first quarter proved to be won by the Blossoms, seeing UAM outscore SAU 24 points to 14 in the opening 10 minutes. Kelsey Blakemore opened the game for Monticello with a layup on their first possession. The advantage was held by UAM for the entirety of the quarter, seeing a high of an 18 points difference.

Quarter two proved to be a flip in the momentum, with the Muleriders scoring 26 points in comparison to the Blossoms' 17. The teams would head to the locker room at half-time with Arkansas-Monticello leading Southern Arkansas, 41-40.

The third quarter remained close as both teams continued to fight back and forth for control over the game. UAM trailed SAU 57-59 heading into the final quarter of the game.

The final quarter was again a battle throughout its entirety. After an intense final period, the game came to an end with the Muleriders on top, 72-76.

Arkansas-Monticello committed 31 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Blossoms return to action on Saturday, Feb. 17th when they host conference member Henderson State University. The game is scheduled to tip off at 1:00 p.m.
