TAHLEQUAH, Ok. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team (0-2, 0-0 GAC) closed out the Central Region Challenge on Saturday against the Bronchos of the University of Central Oklahoma (3-2, 0-0 MIAA). The Weevils came out of the contest with a 70-57 loss.
Isaac Jackson led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (0-2), posting 17 points in the game. Jackson hit 7-15 total field goals on the day, with one three-pointer made, and 2-2 free throws. He also contributed 11 total rebounds, three assists, and a block in his 34 minutes. Jackson, entering his third active season with the Boll Weevils, recorded his 1,000th point with UAM on a free throw. He becomes the 27th player in program history to reach the milestone, passing Darrell Rhodes (1,004) in Saturday's game.
Josh Smith was the second Boll Weevil in the double-digits, scoring 16 points. Smith hit 6-12 field goals and 4-4 from the line while grabbing six rebounds and one steal.
Jakob Zenon saw 11 points posted on the afternoon as the final Boll Weevil in the double-digits. Zenon went 3-9 on field goals, 2-6 from beyond the arc, and 3-3 from the free throw line while grabbing two rebounds and two steals.
Central Oklahoma (3-2) was led by
Matthew Willenborg with 26 points.
Central Oklahoma won the first half of the game, as the Bronchos' offense proved much more efficient in the opening 20 minutes, outscoring Arkansas-Monticello 42-21. The Bronchos were 19-31 on shots (61.29%), compared to the Weevils' 7-21 (33.33%). The teams would head to the locker room with the Weevils trailing, 42-21.
Arkansas-Monticello found success in the second 20-minute period, outscoring the Bronchos, 36 points to 28. The Weevils were 13-27 on shots (48.15%), compared to Central Oklahoma's 8-25 (32%). Unfortunately, the effort proved not enough, as the final buzzer rang, concluding the game with a 70-57 loss for Arkansas-Monticello.
Arkansas-Monticello committed 17 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
