FORT SMITH, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 GAC) closed out the MIAA/GAC Crossover Saturday afternoon in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The Blossoms closed out the tournament with a
61-54 win over the Jets of Newman University (0-2, 0-0 MIAA).
Alindsey Long led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (2-0), posting 18 points in the matchup. Long hit 8-16 total field goals on the day with two three-pointers made. She also contributed three rebounds in her 37 minutes played, along with two assists and two steals.
Alyssa Batton was the other Blossom in the double-digits, posting 14 points in the game. Batton went 5-14 on field goals, 2-3 on threes, and 2-4 on free throws with five rebounds and one assist.
Brilynn Findley saw 12 points posted on the afternoon as the final Blossom in the double-digits. Findley went 5-12 on field goals and 2-4 from the free throw line while grabbing eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Newman University was led by
Jaeden McMillin with 17 points.
Newman won the opening half of the game, as the Jets outscored the Blossoms 18-16 in the first quarter and 17-10 in the second. UAM exchanged baskets back and forth at the start of the first quarter, tying the game four different times; however, the Blossoms fell behind for the remainder of the half. The teams headed to the locker room at the half with the Blossoms trailing the Jets, 35-26.
Arkansas-Monticello came out of the locker room with its engines fired up. The Blossoms outscored the Jets 18-10, cutting the deficit from nine points to just one, heading into the fourth quarter 45-44. The Blossoms held the Jets to single-digits in the fourth quarter, scoring 17 points to Newman's 9. A jumper from
Alyssa Batton gave UAM its advantage over the Jets, carrying the momentum to a game-high of seven points. As the time ran out, Arkansas-Monticello came out on top in a 61-54 victory.
Arkansas-Monticello committed 12 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
