MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team (2-2, 0-0 GAC) hosted Arkansas Baptist College (4-3, 0-0 CAC) Thursday evening inside Steelman Field House. The Weevils came out of the fourth contest of the year with a 72-67 win over the Buffaloes.
Isaac Jackson led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (2-2, 0-0 GAC), posting 28 points in the game. Jackson hit 9-13 total field goals on the day and 10-14 free throws. He also contributed four total rebounds, three steals, two assists, and a block in his 40 minutes.
Jakob Zenon was the second Boll Weevil in the double-digits, scoring 14 points. Zenon hit 4-15 field goals, four three-pointers, and 2-2 from the line while grabbing three rebounds and two assists.
Josh Smith was the third Boll Weevil in double-digits for UAM, scoring 13 points. Smith hit 6-9 field goals and 1-3 free throws while grabbing eight rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.
Giancarlo Valdez saw 10 points posted on the evening as the final Boll Weevil in the double-digits. Valdez went 4-6 on field goals, 1-2 from beyond the arc, and 1-2 from the line while grabbing four rebounds and three assists.
Arkansas Baptist (4-3, 0-0 CAC) was led by
Rodregus Patton with 12 points.
Arkansas-Monticello came out hot to open the game, taking a 9-4 lead over the Buffaloes early thanks to six points from
Josh Smith. The Weevils would increase their lead throughout the opening 20 minutes to a half-high of seven points with 9:37 left on the clock. The Buffaloes looked to cut the deficit; however, as time ran out, the half came to a close with the Weevils on top. The teams were sent to the locker rooms with UAM leading, 33-29.
The second 20 minutes proved more evenly matched, as Arkansas-Monticello outscored Arkansas Baptist 39-38. The Weevils held control for the rest of the game, seeing a game-high advantage of 10 points after a layup from the team's leading scorer,
Isaac Jackson. UAM saw their final points of the game on free throws. The game would conclude with a 72-67 victory for Arkansas-Monticello.
Arkansas-Monticello committed 12 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
