Weevils Take Back-to-Back Wins Over Griffons in Home Opener

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team returned home to Weevils Field at Union Bank Park for their 2025 home opener Saturday afternoon, taking on the Griffons of Missouri Western State University. The Weevils closed out the first day winning both games of the doubleheader, finishing game one with a 5-2 victory, followed by a 4-3 final score in game two after 7 innings.

Game 1, 9 Innings

Scoring Recap:
Arkansas-Monticello kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first, with Roc Hawthorne stealing home. Camden Tanner and Kirk Woolf would reach home after a Chaz Poppy double to left center, making it 3-0, four batters into the Weevil's at bat.

The Griffons would find themselves on the board with a single home run. 

Missouri Western would add another run in the top of the fifth after a bunt SAC to the pitcher. 

The Boll Weevils would add the final runs of the game. First, they brought the score to 4-5 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Chase Cripps triple to center field, plating Chaz Poppy. The fifth and final run would come in the bottom of the seventh off a Camden Tanner ground ball that brought in Aidan Garrett, finishing out the game 5-2.

Pitching Performances
- Connor Irvine started on the mound for UAM in game one, taking the win with seven strikeouts, and two runs on five hits. 
- Lane Imhoff was next for the Weevils pitching 2.0 innings with two strikeouts and one hit.
- Nelson Mercado closed out the last 1.0 inning, giving up one run and striking out 3.

Offensive Showcase
- Chaz Poppy - 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, and 1 run scored.

Scoring Recap:
Missouri Western was first on the board in the top of the first with an RBI thanks to a single to left field. 

The Weevils were quick to respond with two of their own in the bottom of the first thanks to Camden Tanner's single to left field that brought in Roc Hawthorne and Chase Cripps who drove in Camden Tanner.

The Griffons would place another run in the top of the second off a ground out to second.

The Weevils would tack on another run in the third off a Camden Tanner  solo home run, the first for the Boll Weevils for the season and the first under the new lights at Weevils Field at Union Bank Park.

UAM would continue pacing the Griffons adding another run in the bottom of the fourth off a Griffons wild pitch bringing in Will Owens

The Griffons added the final run of the game off a ground ball, it wouldn't be enough as the Weevils took the game, 4-3.

Pitching Performances
- Maxim Mrakovcic started on the mound in game two, throwing 4.0 innings with two runs allowed on four hits, earning the win.
- John White tossed 2.0 innings, with one strikeout and two hits.
- Kyle Roop would close out the final 1.0 inning, earning the save, with one strikeout.

Offensive Showcase
- Camden Tanner - 2-for-3 with 1 home run, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored.

Today's wins bring Arkansas-Monticello to a 4-1 record for the 2025 season.

Arkansas-Monticello is back in action tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, February 9, as they continue their home opening series against Missouri Western State University. The first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from Weevils Field at Union Bank Park.
