Boll Weevils Sweep Missouri Western to Close Home Opening Series

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Following their home opening wins Saturday, The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team closed out their final non-conference series with a sweep over Missouri Western State University on Sunday afternoon. The Weevils came out of the Sunday matinee with a 14-5 victory over the Griffons.

Scoring Recap:
Missouri Western struck early adding five runs to the board in the top of the first off, courtesy of two doubles and a single to left center, an error, and a sacrifice fly. 

The Boll Weevils responded quickly, plating their own four runs in the bottom of the first. Chaz Poppy singled up the middle scoring Camden Tanner, one batter later Kirk Woolf would cross home off a bases-loaded walk. Chaz Poppy crossed the plate off a Griffons wild pitch, and a Justin Santoyo sacrifice fly to right field would bring in Will Owens.

After batting around the order in the first, UAM found four more in the next inning. Chaz Poppy and Kirk Woolf would be brought in via a Chase Cripps double down the left field line and Chase Cripps and Will Owens crossed home after a single up the middle from Justin Santoyo. The second inning would finish with the Weevils up, 8-5.

After two scoreless innings, Monticello would score in the remaining four. Roc Hawthorne was plated after a single from Kirk Woolf in the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Aidan Garrett sacrificed to shortstop to cross Chase Cripps. Two runs would find home in the bottom of the seventh, Camden Tanner advanced home off a balk from MWSU, with Kirk Woolf coming in off a grounder from Will Owens.

The final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the eighth as Aidan Garrett homered to right center to score himself and Justin Santoyo. UAM would end the game with the win, 14-5.

Pitching Performances
- Bryce Louis started on the mound for Monticello, pitching 5.0 innings with five runs allowed on one strikeout and eight hits, earning the win.
- Trey Miller saw 2.0 innings for the Weevils with two strikeouts.
- Dylan Vail was next for UAM pitching 1.0 inning with one strikeout
- Preston Crow closed out the remaining 1.0 inning, with one strikeout and one hit.

Offensive Showcase
- Camden Tanner - 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Chase Cripps - 2-for-4 with a double, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored.
- Kirk Woolf - 2-for-4 with a stolen base, 3 runs scored and an RBI.
- Aidan Garrett - 2-for-3 with a home run, 3 RBI, and 1 run scored.
- Justin Santoyo - 1-for-2 with 3 RBI and 1 run scored.

With the wins this weekend, the Bolls Weevils extend their 2025 season record to 5-1.

UP NEXT
Arkansas-Monticello will return to the field on Tuesday, February 11, for the first non-conference midweek game. They will travel to Russellville, Ark., to take on the Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech University. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
