Boll Weevils Drop High-Scoring Midweek Game to Delta State

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils fell to the Statesmen of Delta State University Tuesday evening at Union Bank Park. Nearly four hours from the start of the midweek contest the nine inning ball game came to a close, with a 20-11 Boll Weevil loss.

Game 1, 9 Innings

Delta State University: 20, Arkansas-Monticello: 11
WP: A. McCrady (1-0)
LP: Vincent Segovia (0-1)
SV: None

Scoring Recap:
The Statesmen added eight runs over the first two innings putting themselves ahead early. A home run to left center from DSU kicked off the scoring in the first and was followed by a single up the middle that would score an unearned run. Two more would cross from Delta State to close out the first off another single up the middle. Two two-run home runs in the second would plate four across with the Statesmen taking the lead, 8-0.

After holding DSU scoreless for the first time in an inning, the Boll Weevils put their first runs of the night on the board in the bottom of the third as Kirk Woolf singled down the right-field line scoring Roc Hawthorne. A wild pitch from DSU would bring in Camden Tanner.

Three more runs were added to the tally for Delta State as two runs would come in off singles to the right side and middle, as the third would cross off a ground out to second base.

Down nine, UAM would see Justin Santoyo come home off an Aidan Garrett single through the right side. Logan Jones and Garrett added the remaining two runs as Hawthorne doubled to right center.

The game was put out of reach in the top of the fifth as Delta State added eight runs to the board taking the game to 19-5. A single to left center and a bases-loaded walk placed the first two runs home as the bats started heating for the Statesmen. A single through the left side and a Boll Weevil error allowed a runner on first to score, followed by a run in from a UAM wild pitch. A sacrifice fly to center field added the sixth run, and a double to the right side added the remaining two runs of the top inning.

Needing to find some runs to start a comeback and cut the deficit, Chase Cripps went long as he homered over the left field wall to bring in Gavin Shuttlesworth. Santoyo crossed home for the second time off a Statesmen error that allowed Logan Jones to reach first.

Holding the Statesmen scoreless in the top of the sixth, the Weevils would cut the run rule score by two, 19-10, in the bottom of the sixth as Woolf ran in off Chase Cripp's second two-run home run of the night.

After a scoreless seventh, the Statesmen added their final run off a home run to right field making it 20-10 in the top of the eighth, followed by the Boll Weevils final run in the bottom of the eighth as Chase Cripps would score an unearned run off a ground out. The Statesmen would leave Monticello with a 20-11 win.
