MONTICELLO, Ark. - Coming off a 13-inning 5-4 victory over #15 ranked Harding University the Arkansas-Monticello baseball team is now set to play four home games this week as they welcome the Muleriders of Southern Arkansas University and Tigers of Ouachita Baptist University. The week will begin on Tuesday, April 1 as the Boll Weevils take on the Muleriders, followed by a three-game GAC series at Union Bank Park with the Tigers on Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5.
LAST MEETING
Southern Arkansas University - The Boll Weevils were the winners in the last non-regular season meeting, defeating the Muleriders 3-2 in the GAC Conference Tournament at the Dickey-Stephens Park in Little Rock. After five scoreless innings, the SAU offense found the first run of the ball game on a solo home run in the top of the sixth.
Kirk Woolf tied up the game in the seventh, driving in
DeShaun Cordova on a single to left field.
Camden Tanner extended the lead in the eighth inning on an RBI single of his own through the six-hole.
Aidan Garrett crossed on the play to give the Boll Weevils a 2-1 lead. The Muleriders tied up the game in the top of the ninth, scoring the tying run on a single of their own through the left side of the infield.
Aidan Garrett would walk it off for UAM in the bottom of the inning, scoring
Chaz Poppy for the winner on a SAC fly to left field. | In the last regualr season series the Weevils went 2-1 (7-3, 2-6, 1-0) taking the series from SAU. The Boll Weevils struck first in the series opener, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.
Roc Hawthorne crossed the plate first, scoring from third on the catcher's throw to second on a double steal.
Chase Cripps drove in
Camden Tanner from second on a line drive to left center. An RBI single up the middle put the Muleriders on the board in the third, but was matched in the bottom half of the inning when
Parker Dorrance drove in
Chaz Poppy.
Kirk Woolf launched a solo home run over the left field wall in the fifth to push the Monticello lead to 5-1.
Cade Cancilla brought two more runs across the plate in the sixth on a to run shot down the left field line. Southern Arkansas found two final runs in the eighth inning, but the effort would prove not enough as the Boll Weevils will come out on top, 7-3. The Muleriders scored first in game two, taking a wild pitch opportunity to bring a run across the plate in the first inning.
Cade Cancilla roped a SAC line drive to left field in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1, scoring
Roc Hawthorne on the play. UAM found a second run in the second when
Chase Cripps scored on a single to center from
Aidan Garrett. Southern Arkansas drove in run number two from second base in the third on a two out double to center field, tying the game back up at two-all. A three-run fourth inning pushed SAU into the lead. The Muleriders would increase that lead to 6-2 in the sixth when they scored another run. The Boll Weevils were unable to get a run across the plate for the remainder of the game, eventually closing game one with a loss. Game three was held scoreless for the entirety of the originally scheduled seven innings. But
Cade Cancilla gave the Boll Weevils the win on a walk-off to center field in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Aidain Garrett on the drive. The winning pitchers from the series were
Connor Irvine (game one) and
Kyle Roop (game three).
Ouachita Baptist University - Arkansas-Monticello went 2-1 in the last meeting with the Tigers in 2024, dropping games one and two, 0-1, 8-14, prior to winning game three 7-6. The Tigers were the first on the board in game one, scoring two runs in the second, two in the fourth, and two in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead.
Camden Tanner doubled to left center in the sixth, scoring
Chaz Poppy in the play, to give UAM their first offensive success of the afternoon.
Kirk Woolf brought home Tanner on a single up the middle to make it a 6-2 ball game. Ouachita Baptist found four more runs in the seventh to push their lead to 10-2. UAM was unable to respond the rest of the game. The loan run on the game cam in the third inning. Ouachita Baptist scored on a double down he right field line. Monticello's offense had four hits on the game, but were unable to cross the plate. OUA took the lead early again in game two, scoring the first run on an infield error and two more on a home run of the scoreboard in right center field.
Cade Cancilla drove in
Aidan Garrett for Monticello's first run in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back doubles gave the Tigers a fourth run in the second. Immediately after, a two run bomb pushed Ouachita to a 6-1 lead.
Noah Estrem gave the Weevils their first run of the second on an RBI single through the six-hole.
Aidan Garrett drove in both
Will Owens and
Noah Estrem on a single through the right side, followed by a SAC fly ball from Cancilla to make it a one run game.
Camden Tanner drove in
Roc Hawthorne from third on a ground ball to the first baseman in the fourth, tying the game at 6-6. With the bases loaded in the eighth,
Logan Jones drove in the game-winning run for a 7-6 win over the Tigers.
Aidan Garrett was the solo winning pitcher of the weekend.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE WEEVILS
The Boll Weevils went 2-2 this past week, dropping a non-conference midweek with the Reddies of Henderson State, 11-9. Arkansas-Monticello then dropped game one of the three-game series with Harding, 7-1, before taking game two and three, 10-1 and 5-4 (13 innings).
