LAST MEETING
The last time these two teams met they competed in both the GAC and NCAA postseason in a one week time span, with the Boll Weevils winning two of the three. On May 11, 2024, Arkansas-Monticello dropped the first meeting with ATU, 3-9, before turning around and besting the Wonder Boys in the GAC Championship, 8-5, punching their ticket into the NCAA Central Region Tournament. The two teams would face off once more to open the Central Region Tournament with the Boll Weevils winning, 11-9, dropping the Wonder Boys into the elimination bracket.
UAM V ATU G1: In game one on May 11, The Wonder Boys struck first in game one of the day, scoring a single run in the first.
Parker Dorrance drove in
Chase Cripps in the second to tie the game at 1-1. Arkansas Tech's offense put up six runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to take a 9-1 lead over Monticello. An RBI double from
Kirk Woolf, followed by an RBI single from Cade
Cade Cancilla shrank the Tech lead to 9-3. The effort fell short, as the Weevils dropped the game with the Wonder Boys.
2024 GAC Championship Game: Heading into the championship game, looking for the title,
Chaz Poppy would kick it off with a three-run bomb in the first inning. Tech scored three runs of their own in the second to tie the game at three all. Poppy tacked on the Boll Weevils fourth and fifth runs in the third with his second home run of the contest.
Camden Tanner scored in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk, followed by two RBI in the eighth to increase the Monticello lead to 8-3. After two ATU runs in the top of the ninth, UAM closed out the final out-of-the-ball game to take the conference title and punch their ticket into the NCAA postseason.
Central Region Tournament: In a twist of fate, the NCAA paired both teams up once more in the Central Region Tournament. UAM scored first in the contest, seeing
Kirk Woolf drive in
Roc Hawthorne in the top of the first on a SAC fly to center field. The Wonder Boys responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Between the second and third innings, the Boll Weevils hit three home runs and saw four runs scored.
Parker Dorrance launched one to left field in the second, scoring
Cade Cancilla on the drive.
Kirk Woolf and
Chaz Poppy hit back-to-back solo shots in the third. Arkansas Tech saw a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to keep the score to 5-4.
Roc Hawthorne and
Camden Tanner each drove in a run in the fourth to push the Monticello advantage to 7-4. The Wonder Boys won the fifth and sixth innings, keeping ATU within one run of UAM. Hawthorne hit an opposite-field home run in the seventh, but a two-run home run for Tech tied the game at 8-8. An RBI single up the middle in the eighth, followed by Woolf's second home run of the game in the ninth, gave the Boll Weevils an 11-8 lead. ATU scored a run in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to take back the lead from UAM. Monticello earned its 33 wins of the season and remained in the winner's bracket.
Camden Tanner also etched his name in the record book against Tech, setting a new single-season hit record at 84.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Wonder Boys lead Arkansas-Monticello in the record, 74-46, which dates back to the first meeting on May 1, 1976, an 11-9 win for the Weevils. The overall conference record stands at 35-66 with ATU leading. The Boll Weevils have a 20-37 record in Monticello, an 18-35 record in Russellville, and an 8-2 record at neutral locations. The largest margin of Victory for the men in green and white came via a 16-4 9-inning decider in April of 2019. To this date the Weevils and Wonder Boys have met 120 times, with UAM running in 611 runs, averaging 5.09 runs a game.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE WEEVILS
