MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team opened Central Region Tournament play Thursday evening inside ISG Field in Mankato, Minnesota, taking on the No. 2 seed, Minnesota State University. The Boll Weevils struck first and never looked back, upsetting the Mavericks, 5-3, to advance to the winners bracket.

The Boll Weevils plated the first two runs of the game in the top of the fourth off a
Elijah Nichols single that brought
Chaz Poppy in from second, and a
Kyle Tolley two out double to centerfield brought home
Camden Tanner.
Minnesota State saw its first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one run game.
With
Kirk Woolf on second, Poppy put a ball down the left field line to switch places with Woolf making it, 3-1 Weevils.
The Mavericks once again cut the deficit to just one in the eighth off a double down the left line.
With a sacrifice fly from Santoyo and a ground rule double from Tanner the Weevils extended their lead by three in the top of the ninth.
MSU snuck in one more in the bottom of the ninth, but the Boll Weevils held on taking game one of the tournament, 5-3.
Pitching Performances

Connor Irvine started on the mound for the Weevils pitching 7.0 innings allowing just one hit on seven hits, while striking out five batters to secure the win.

Kyle Roop was called from the bullpen to pitch the remaining 2.0 innings, allowing just two runs on three hits and striking out two batters to record the save.
