HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's golf team opened the 9th Annual Battle for the Belt Monday in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The Weevils finished the first day after 36-holes in sixth place.
The Weevils shot a combined score of 587, 11-over par. Union and Henderson State finished tied atop the leaderboard after day one at 4-under par (572). Fellow Great American Conference member Harding sits in third, posting a total of 576 (E).
Blayden Gillham led the Boll Weevils on day one, tied for 12th place at even-par (144). Gillham posted a first-round of 73 (+1), followed by a second-round of 71 (-1).
Daniel Taylor shot a first-round of 72 (E), before posting a second-round of 73 (+1), to finish day one tied for 16th at 1-over par (145).
Landry Rogers finished tied for 24th at 3-over par (147), after firing a first-round of 73 (+1) and 2-over par (74) in the second-round.
Sawyor Hamilton fired a first-round of 79 (+7), before posting a second-round score of 72 (E) to finish the day with an overall score of 151 (+7), tying for 44th.
Carson Slaughter closed out the Weevils on day one finished tied for 59th at 12-over par (156), after posting a score of 9-over par (81) in round one and 3-over par (75) in round two.
The Boll Weevils combined for 31 birdies for the day, 15 in round one and 16 in round two, with Gillham and Taylor shooting an eagle in round two.
The Weevils will play the final round of the tournament, tomorrow Tuesday, September 30, starting at 9:00 a.m.
