WEATHERFORD, Okla. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevil basketball opened its Oklahoma trip with a stop at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday against the Bulldogs. The Weevils came out of the contest with an 82-69 win inside Pioneer Event Center.
Jakob Zenon led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (10-15, 6-13 GAC), posting 24 points in his Thursday night performance. Zenon hit seven field goals on the night, with five from three-point range, while going a perfect 5-for-5 from the line. He grabbed six defensive rebounds and blocked one shot to round out the stats of his 37 minutes.
Lamont Jackson was the second Boll Weevil in the double-digits, scoring 14 points on the evening. Jackson hit 5-of-9 field goals and four three-pointers, while grabbing eight defensive rebounds, one steal, and an assist.
Isaac Jackson saw 12 points on the night, hitting 5-of-11 field goals and 1-of-4 free throws. He grabbed four offensive rebounds and dished out two assists in his performance.
Ashton Price and
Josh Smith were the remaining Boll Weevils in double-digits, with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Price hit two field goals and 7-of-8 free throws, with eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Smith found the net on three different occasions, while also going 4-for-4 from the line. His night was enhanced with eight total rebounds and three assists.
Southwestern Oklahoma State (10-15, 7-12 GAC) was led by
Ty Frierson with 15 points.
Arkansas-Monticello took advantage of the game in the first half, with
Isaac Jackson opening the scoring with a Jumper for the early 2-0 lead. Throughout the opening 20 minutes, the Weevil lead would increase to a half-high 14-point advantage. The Boll Weevils were 12-for-31 on field goals, with a 46.13% from three-point range (6-13), compared to the Bulldogs' 8-28. SWOSU pushed back in the final minute of the period, closing the UAM lead back to a single-digit deficit, but inevitably saw the teams sent to the locker rooms at the buzzer with UAM leading 33-25.
The second 20-minute period proved to be a much closer fight between the two. Arkansas-Monticello opened the half with two free throws from
Jakob Zenon, and increased its lead to a game-high 15 points before Southwestern Oklahoma could retaliate. The lead would dwindle to as low as 6 points, but saw threes from Zenon and
Felix Smedjeback to bounce UAM farther into the driver's seat. The Boll Weevils would see a 15-point lead on three different occasions in the half, with the last on a jumper from
Isaac Jackson with 3:07 left to play. The contest would conclude with an 82-69 victory for UAM.
Arkansas-Monticello committed 10 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
