MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello Weevils Baseball are back in action Friday and Saturday at Weevils Field at Union Bank Park for their third GAC meeting of the year. The Weevils are set to host the Reddies of Henderson State University, with a 6:00 p.m. game on Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
LAST MEETING
GAC Playoffs: The Weevils fell to Henderson on May 1 and 3 in the 2025 GAC playoffs, 7-8 and 3-4. In the first meeting of the play offs, Henderson State struck first with a two-run triple from Louis Holt in the top of the second. UAM responded in the bottom half with an RBI single from
Aidan Garrett. The Reddies extended their lead in the third, adding two more runs to make it 4-1.
Elijah Nichols brought the Weevils closer with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. A three-run home run by Cal Jones in the seventh gave HSU a 7-3 lead. UAM answered, in dramatic fashion, in the bottom of the seventh with a grand slam from
Justin Santoyo to tie the game at 7-7. Henderson State plated the go-ahead run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Luke Farrar and held UAM scoreless in the bottom half to escape with the win. In the second game the Reddies knocked out the Weevils. The Weevils struck first in the ball game as
Justin Santoyo would cross home on a sacrifice fly in the second. Henderson State found their way on the board to tie it 1-1 in the sixth. The tie would not last long as UAM answered back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning with
Kirk Woolf scoring on a wild pitch, followed by
Chaz Poppy on a bases-loaded walk. The Reddies would seal the conference tournament in their favor in the seventh off a fly out and a home run to take the game, 4-3.
GAC Midweek: The Weevils dropped thier non-conference midweek to Henderson, 9-11. Henderson State jumped ahead early, scoring four total runs in the first after taking the first pitch of the ball game over the scoreboard. The Reddies would go on to score one in the second, three in the third, and one in the fourth to increase their lead to 9-0.
Justin Santoyo put UAM on the board in the bottom of the fourth, driving in two runs on a single to right.
Brodie Romero wore a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in a third run. Arkansas-Monticello saw a fourth run in the fifth as
Chase Cripps drove in
Camden Tanner on a triple to right center field. The sixth inning saw one run for HSU and three runs for UAM. A double down the left field line gave the Reddies a 10-4 lead, but a three-run home run to center field from
Roc Hawthorne brought the Weevils back within three. Henderson State scored a final run in the seventh on a single. UAM scored two runs in the ninth as a last-effort push from the offense. Back-to-back doubles from
Justin Santoyo and
Eli Marvin scored the first, followed by an RBI from
Cade Cancilla. The effort fell short as UAM would drop the game, 11-9.
GAC Series: In the conference series on the year the Reddies took the series 2-1 over UAM. Dropping game one, 2-12 (8 innings), and game two, 7-8, before finding a win in game three, 4-2. In game one the Reddies offense was the sole performer throughout the first six innings of the ball game, building a 9-0 lead over the Boll Weevils. UAM found a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, with
Cade Cancilla driving in the first on a double to right center and
Chase Cripps scoring the second on a double to right center of his own. HSU scored three runs in the bottom half of the eighth to complete the 10-run run-rule. In game two Arkansas-Monticello was the first to put runs on the board in the top of the second as a
Will Owens ground out advanced
Chaz Poppy home. The Weevils plated another run in the top of the third as
Camden Tanner grounded out to score
Roc Hawthorne on an unearned run. The Reddies would bust the game wide open in the bottom of the third adding all eight of their runs. Seven runs crossed home via six singles, and a bases-loaded walk added the eighth run, giving Henderson an 8-2 lead in the third. UAM would start the try for a comeback in the sixth off a
Justin Santoyo ground out that brought in
Chase Cripps. In the seventh, an unearned run from
Cade Cancilla was put on the board off a
Kirk Woolf sacrifice fly to center field. The Boll Weevils could only muster three more runs between the eighth and ninth innings. Santoyo doubled down the right-field line to bring in Cripps in the eighth, and
Chaz Poppy homered to right field in the ninth to score Tanner and himself. The Weevils would fall 7-8 to the Reddies. In the final game of the series Henderson State put themselves on the board first in the bottom of the second with a home run to right center. The Weevils answered right back in the third off an HSU wild pitch that brought home
Cade Cancilla.
Chase Cripps would advance home in the fourth off a single bunt from
Aidan Garrett. In the sixth Cripps would score once more as
Eli Marvin doubled down the right field line, and Marvin came in as Cancilla singled through the right side. The final run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh as the Reddies hit a homer to right field, but it wouldn't be enough as the Weevils took the second came 4-2.
Nelson Mercado recorded the win in game three.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Boll Weevils lead Henderson in the overall record, 71-60. The record book dates back to the first meeting in April of 1976 a 4-8 loss for UAM. The first win for the Weevils would occur on March 19, 1977, in Arkadelphia in a 5-4 decision, the very next game held on the same day would be a 0-2 UAM forfeit loss. The longest win streak for Monticello stands at eight, achieved between March of 2014 and May of 2016. At Union Bank Park the Weevils are 38-21, while on the road they are 26-36,in overall conference play they sit at 57-45. Through 131 games played UAM has brought in 717 runs, averaging 5.47 runs per game.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE WEEVILS
The Weevils dominated the Buccaneers on Tuesday, February 24, with a 7 inning run-rule, 19-4 win in Memphis. Among the Weevils was senior outfielder
Kyle Tolley, who returned for his first start after missing the first 12 games of the season due to injury. Tolley returned with a bang, going 4-for-5 on the afternoon with a in the park grand slam in the seventh inning. The Jonesboro native returned to the diamond and made an immediate impact in the Boll Weevil offense.
