Weevils Take Two in Friday Doubleheader with Bulldogs

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team welcomed the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University to Monticello Friday for the first two games of its Great American Conference series. The Boll Weevils swept the doubleheader, taking game one, 11-8, and game two, 9-3.

Game 1, 9 Innings

Scoring Recap:
Southwestern Oklahoma was the first team on the board in game one, jumping ahead to a 4-0 lead across the first four innings of play. The Bulldogs saw scoring in the first on a home run, an RBI double in the third, and two runs plated in the fourth.

Elijah Olaybal gave UAM its first run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo shot over the green monster in right field.

The Bulldogs scored two more in the sixth with a two-run home run to left, increasing the lead to 6-1.

Arkansas-Monticello responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs. Eli Marvin and Darcy Barry each hit solo home runs, with Marvin's to center and Barry's to left. AJ Keely drove in Kyle Tolley with a double down the left field line, and Gabe Kuttenkuler drove in Keely with a single. The rally cut the SWOSU lead to 6-5.

Southwestern Oklahoma scored its seventh run of the ball game in the seventh on an infield single.

UAM produced six runs of its own in the inning, with Eli Marvin kicking off the offense with his second home run of the ball game to tie it at 7-7. Darcy Barry scored on the throw to second after stealing third, taking the lead, 8-7. AJ Keely once again scored Kyle Tolley on a double down the left field line, and Gabe Kuttenkuler drove in Keely on a double to right. Camden Tanner drove in the 11th run of the game for Monticello on a single to right field. The inning closed with Arkansas-Monticello leading, 11-7.

SWOSU scored an eighth run in the top of the ninth on an error, but were unable to produce any more. The series opener concluded with an 11-8 win for the Boll Weevils.

Pitching Performances:
- Hunter Heath started on the bump in game one, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing six earned runs on eight hits. He struck out three batters and walked one.
- Alberto Oropeza grabbed the win in the series opener, tossing 2.2 innings with one earned run on four hits. He walked two and struck out one.
- John White grabbed his third save of the season, throwing to one batter with the bases loaded and getting the final out of the game.

Offensive Showcase:
- Eli Marvin - 2-for-5 with two home runs, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored
- Elijah Olaybal - 2-for-5 with a home run, 2 RBI, and 1 run scored
- Camden Tanner - 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI
- Darcy Barry - 1-for-4 with a home run

Scoring Recap:
Game two began with an offensive explosion from the Boll Weevils. After holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the first, Arkansas-Monticello would put up an eight-spot on the board. Camden Tanner led off the inning with a double to left center. After advancing to third, Tanner was brought home by Elijah Olaybal on a single to left center. UAM saw the bases loaded, and back-to-back walks from Darcy Barry and Kyle Tolley plated the second and third runs. Caden Carney drove in the fourth on a ground ball and reached first on the play. Gabe Kuttenkuler walked to score run number five in the inning.

Camden Tanner hit his second double of the inning to clear the bases, scoring Kuttenkuler, Carney, and Tolley for the final three runs of the inning for UAM. 

Carney increased the Boll Weevil lead by one in the bottom of the second, driving in Jackson Riedling for UAM's ninth and final run of the ball game on a single down the left field line.

Southwestern Oklahoma went on to score two runs in the fifth on an RBI single and a final run in the seventh on a wild pitch. The contest came to an end with a 9-3 win for Arkansas-Monticello, securing a series win for the Boll Weevils.

The doubleheader sweep on the day pushed UAM to a 14-9, 11-3 GAC record for the 2026 season.

Pitching Performances:
- Vincent Segovia started on the mound in game two, throwing 5.0 innings with two earned runs on four hits. He struck out three and walked three.
- Bryce McGuire saw 1.1 innings with one run allowed on two hits and two walks. He struck out one batter.
- Nathan McManus saw one pitch thrown on the night, seeing the batter ground into a double play to end the game.

Offensive Showcase:
- Camden Tanner - 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI, and two runs scored
- Caden Carney - 1-for-3 with two RBI, and 1 run scored. He stole one base.

Notes of Interest:
- John White saw his 10th mound appearance of the year in game one for UAM.
- Eli Marvin's two-home run game is his second of the season.
- Elijah Olaybal and Eli Marvin each lead UAM in home runs with 7 each.
- Arkansas-Monticello sits at T-5th in DII baseball for total home runs with 39.
