2009-10 ALL-GSC MEN'S BASKETBALL RELEASE (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Arkansas at Monticello junior forward Jarrell Turner has been selected to the 2009-10 All-Gulf South Conference West Division First Team, announced Tuesday by the league office.
Turner (Chicago, Ill.) just finished his first regular season with the Boll Weevils and leads the team into the GSC Championship Tournament, starting this Friday, March 5 in Southaven, Miss.
The 6-4, 190 pound first-year transfer from South Suburban College in Illinois leads the Boll Weevils in scoring and rebounding with averages of 13.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range. His rebound average ranks sixth among all players in the GSC, while his field goal shooting ranks seventh.
Turner was also UAM’s leader in minutes played this season, with an average of 35.7 per outing, which included 13 games with the full 40 minutes played and a 44-minute game in an overtime win over Harding on January 23. His minutes per game average ranks second in the GSC.
Turner had 16 games this season of at least 10 points, which included six 20-point games, with his career-high of 26 points coming in a road win over Ouachita Baptist on January 16. He led the team in scoring in nine games this season.
In addition to his point scoring, Turner also grabbed a season total of 173 rebounds, including 63 offensive rebounds and 110 defensive rebounds. He had five games of at least 10 rebounds and a team-high four double-doubles. Most recently, Turner collected his fourth double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in UAM’s 71-55 win over Southern Arkansas in the regular season finale.
Turner was named GSC-West Player of the Week twice. His first award came on December 16 after he picked up his first career double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds in UAM’s 74-65 win over Alabama-Hunstville at home. His second award came on January 20 after he averaged a double-double of 24.5 points and 10 rebounds per game in a 73-83 loss to Delta State and a 60-48 win over Ouachita Baptist. He had back-to-back career highs in both games with his current career-high of 26 points in the win over OBU.
Turner joins Arkansas Tech’s Brandon Friedel, Laithe Massey, Renard Allen and Delta State’s Chad Akins on the All-GSC West First Team. Friedel was named GSC-West Player of the Year, while his head coach, Mark Downey, earned coach of the year honors. Christian Brothers’ Michael Drake was named GSC-West Freshman of the Year.
