JOHNSON'S CAREER GAME NOT ENOUGH IN LOSS TO OBU

MONTICELLO – Junior Chelsea Johnson’s career-high 26 points was not enough to push the University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team past Ouachita Baptist in a 72-69 loss on Saturday inside Steelman Field House.

Johnson finished 9-of-21 from the field, 6-of-17 from three-point range and 2-of-2 at the foul line. It is the first 20-point game of her two-year career with UAM. The Stafford, Texas native also had three steals and two assists in the loss.

As for Johnson’s team, UAM (6-10, 2-2 Gulf South Conference) rallied from down seven in the second half to create the game’s ninth tie at 61-all with 3:33 remaining following an 11-4 scoring run. OBU (13-4, 4-1 GSC) quickly responded with a 6-0 run to recapture the lead for the final time.

The Cotton Blossoms trimmed the Lady Tiger lead to one point on two occasions in the final 1:09, the last being Johnson’s sixth and final three-pointer of the game with eight seconds remaining to put the score at 70-69 in favor of OBU, which received a pair of free-throws from Domino Miller on the other end to seal the win.

Juniors Jerica Hubbard and Alex Hart also reached double-figures for UAM with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Hubbard added a team-high nine rebounds.

OBU placed three scorers in double-digits, led by A’Laeshia Adams’ 16 points. Beulah Oseuke and Domino Miller each had 13.

The Cotton Blossoms shot 42 percent from the field (26-of-62), 38 percent on three-pointers (9-of-24) and 80 percent at the foul line (8-of-10). UAM did not reach the foul line in the second half. The Lady Tigers shot 42 percent from the field (23-of-55), 30 percent on three-pointers (6-of-20) and 74 percent at the foul line (20-of-27).

UAM returns to action this upcoming Monday, January 24 in Searcy, Ark. against Harding, a game originally scheduled for this past Thursday. The threat of inclement weather forced the postponement. Monday’s tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Rhodes Field House.
