LADY REDDIES GET PAST UAM, 73-67

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. ­– The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team could not overcome an early second half rally by Henderson State on Monday night in a 73-67 loss to the Lady Reddies at the Duke Wells Center.

After trailing 35-29 at halftime, the Lady Reddies (13-9, 4-6 Gulf South Conference) scored the first eight points of the second half to take a two-point lead with 17:28 remaining in regulation. The Cotton Blossoms (6-16, 2-8 GSC) used four consecutive points from junior Channon Haywood at around the five minute mark of the second half, but the team could never manage to gain a lead. It is UAM’s eighth consecutive loss.

In the first half, UAM grew its lead to as much as eight points following an 8-0 scoring run from the 15:52 mark to the 14:50, capped by a jumper in the paint by Haywood. The lady Reddies responded with an 11-2 run to cut UAM’s lead to one point at 17-16 with 11 minutes remaining in the opening period.

Junior Chelsea Johnson tied HSU’s Nyesha Adams for the game-high point total of 17. Haywood added 14 points, while senior Alayna Davis and sophomore Emili Slamons each added 10 points off the bench.

Other than Adams, HSU’s top scorers included Cheree Freeman and Jazmine Ellis with 13 points each, and Gianna Woods with 10 points off the bench.

The Cotton Blossoms finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field (25-of-59), 17 percent on three-pointers (3-of-18) and 67 percent on foul shots (14-of-21). The Lady Reddies shot 49 percent from the field (27-of-55), 50 percent on three-pointers (4-of-8) and 63 percent on foul shots (15-of-24).

UAM returns to action this Thursday, February 17 at home against Harding. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Steelman Field House. The Cotton Blossoms are hosting a WBCA “Pink Zone.” All fans are encouraged to wear pink clothing in support of breast cancer awareness. Pink t-shirts will be on sale at the game.
