LADY BISONS EDGE BLOSSOMS, 64-58

MONTICELLO ­– The Harding University Lady Bisons won a back-and-forth battle with the University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team Thursday night inside Steelman Field House by a final score of 64-58.

The Cotton Blossoms (6-17, 2-9 Gulf South Conference) started the game shooting lights out from the field, extending their lead to as much as 11 points at the 11:11 mark.

The Lady Bisons (16-7, 7-4 GSC) caught fire a minute later with a 12-0 scoring run, capped by five consecutive points from Catherine McMenamy, over the next three minutes to take a 24-22 lead with 6:03 remaining in the first half. HU outscored UAM 9-4 throughout the remainder of the period to take a 33-27 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, UAM opened the scoring on a 7-0 run to take a 34-33 lead in the first two minutes. From that point, the back-and-forth battle ensued with four tie scores and six lead changes throughout the remainder of the contest.

Junior Alex Hart sank a pair of free-throws with 1:53 remaining to tie the game at 58-all, but the Lady Bisons used a jump shot by Danielle Reiher and four made free-throws to seal the win and give UAM its ninth consecutive loss.
Hart led UAM with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including one three-pointer. Juniors Chelsea Johnson, Channon Haywood and Jerica Hubbard all reached double-digits as well with 13, 11 and 10 points, respectively.

HU’s Kristen Celsor led all scorers with 16 points. Reiher added 12 points off the bench, while Sierra Rollins collected a double-double for HU with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Cotton Blossoms ended the game shooting 36 percent from the field (20-of-55), 31 percent on three-pointers (5-of-16) and 65 percent at the foul line (13-of-20). The Lady Bisons shot 42 percent from the field (23-of-55), 46 percent on three-pointers (5-of-11) and 77 percent on foul shots (13-of-17).

UAM returns to action this Saturday, February 19 for the team’s second trip to Arkadelphia of the week, this time to face Ouachita Baptist. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at Bill Vining Arena.
