LADY MULERIDERS OUTLAST UAM IN OT, 66-65

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team concluded the home portion of the 2010-11 schedule with a 66-65 overtime loss to Southern Arkansas on Thursday night inside Steelman Field House.

The Cotton Blossoms (6-19, 2-11 Gulf South Conference) started the game on a 13-0 run, capped by a three-point play from junior Alex Hart at the 15:27 mark of the first half. The Lady Muleriders (4-19, 3-10 GSC) reached the scoreboard for the first time at the 15:11 mark and created the game’s first tie at the 7:04 mark following a 14-0 scoring run, capped by a three-pointer by Goldie White.

The contest was back-and-forth throughout the remainder of the first half and the first six minutes of the second half before UAM tallied the largest lead of the second half for either team at six points following a quick 4-0 run.

The Cotton Blossoms led by two with 1:59 remaining in regulation, but a pair of jumpers by Cha’Kia Lee and Goldie White put SAU on top by two points with 28 seconds left. Junior Jasmine Rush nailed a pair of free-throws with 20 seconds for the final points in regulation.

SAU held a four-point lead with 16 seconds in the overtime period, but that lead was trimmed to one point sophomore Emili Slamons’ three-pointer with less than one second remaining. The Lady Muleriders were able to inbound the ball successfully to seal their second win over UAM this season.

The Cotton Blossoms were led by a game-high 21 points from Hart, who shot 6-of-13 from the field, including one three-pointer, and 8-of-11 at the foul line. UAM’s other top scorers each had a double-double. Junior Channon Haywood had 16 points and 11 rebounds, while junior Jerica Hubbard had 10 points and a game-high 13 boards.

White and Lee were SAU’s top performers with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Lee added 10 rebounds for a double-double.

UAM is set to wrap up the 2010-11 season this Saturday, February 26 in Cleveland, Miss. against nationally fifth-ranked Delta State. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
