ROLLA, Mo. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball erased a 12-point deficit to force a 63-all tie with just under five minutes in regulation, but the Missouri S&T Lady Miners held on for a 79-74 victory over the Cotton Blossoms on Saturday night at Billy Key Court.
The Lady Miners (2-1) took a 12-point lead on a jump shot from Mia Wesley at the 8:05 mark of the second half, which immediately sparked a 14-2 scoring from the Blossoms (2-1) over the next three minutes capped with a fast break layup from sophomore Tamia Grady at the 4:49 mark to force the game's seventh and final tie score at 63-all
S&T responded with a 7-0 run to climb back on top. The Lady Miners held the lead for the remainder of the game, including holding as much as a nine-point lead with just under two minutes remaining.
S&T held a double-digit lead for the majority of the first 10 minutes of the second half after taking a 13-point lead of 44-31 at halftime. The gamestayed to within five points throughout the first 15 minutes of the first half before the Lady Miners used a 11-2 run to grab a double-digit lead at the 5:08 mark of the first period.
The Blossoms finished the game shooting 43 percent from the field (26-for-60), 29 percent on three-pointers (4-for-14) and 58 percent on foul shots (18-for-31). S&T shot 52 percent from the field (28-for-54), 64 percent on three-pointers (7-for-11) and 59 percent on foul shots (16-for-27).
Sophomore Jordan Goforth tied S&T's Mia Wesley for the game-high with 23 points. Goforth finished the game 9-for-16 from the field, including 3-for-6 on three-pointers. Grady and freshman Poohnu Perry also reached double digits in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Blossoms return to the court next Thursday, November 21 at home againstSouthwestern Oklahoma State for the first Great American Conference game of the season. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
