BLOSSOMS OPEN GAC WITH HIGH-SCORING LOSS TO SWOSU

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team combined with Southwestern Oklahoma State for over 200 points in a 118-88 loss to the Bulldogs on Thursday night at home in the first Great American Conference game of the season.

It was the most combined points scored in a UAM women's basketball game since a 128-92 win over Oral Roberts in 1990.

The Bulldogs (3-2, 1-0 GAC) shot nearly 70 percent in the first half and made 24 shots to hold a 60-40 lead at halftime. SWOSU added another 22 baskets in the second half for 58 points.

The Blossoms (2-2, 0-1 GAC) jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first two minutes of the game on a three-pointer from sophomore Nikki Mullen, but SWOSU immediately responded with a 10-0 scoring run for the final lead change of the game. UAM trimmed the lead to two points at the 14:13 mark on a jumper fromDonlicia James after junior Monique Biggins sunk a layup on the previous possession.  The Bulldogs answered with an 8-0 scoring run to reach a double-digit lead with 13:03 remaining in theopening period.

UAM again answered to trim SWOSU's lead to four points at the 10:21 mark on a jumper from Biggins to cap an 8-2 run. SWOSU answered with six consecutive points to regain a double-digit lead, which it held for the remainder of the contest. SWOSU's lead grew to 20 points with 2:15 remaining in the first period. The Bulldogs held their largest lead of 31 points on a pair of freethrows from Kimmy Sawatzky at the 3:27 mark of the second half.

SWOSU ended the game shooting 63 percent from the field (46-for-73), 31 percent on three-pointers (5-for-16) and 70 percent on foul shots (21-for-30). UAM finished at 39 percent from the field (30-for-77), 33 percent on three-pointers (3-for-9) and 76 percent on foul shots (25-for-33).

The Blossoms placed five scorers in double-digits, led by sophomore Tamia Grady's game-high 22 points. Grady also added four assists to her final totals. Sophomore Jordan Goforth finished with 13 points, Biggins and Mullen each had 12 and junior Brandae Carroll added 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench.

Michelle Fisher led the Bulldogs with 21 points. Sarah Mendoza added 19.

The Blossoms are back in action on Saturday, November 23 at home against Northwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
