MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team shot 87 percent from the field in the second half to capture an 84-74 come-from-behind win over Lindenwood on Saturday in the 2013-14 season opener
After shooting 36 percent from the field in the first half, the Blossoms missed only three shots on 23 attempts in the final 20 minutes, including no missed shots from sophomore Jordan Goforth. After going 2-for-4 in the first half,Goforth responded with a 10-for-10 performance in the final period to give her a game-high 28 points. She also tied teammates Monique Biggins and Nikki Mullen for the team-high in rebounds with six.
Sophomore Tamia Grady trailed closely with 26 points on a 9-for-15 shootingperformance, including a 5-for-6 outing from behind the arc. Mullen also reached double-digits with 13 points.
Lindenwood (0-1) jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game, but the Blossoms (1-0) responded with an 11-0 run to tie the contest at the 13:04 mark of the first period. The Lions held the lead for the remainder of the first half and took a seven-point advantage of 35-28 into the lockerroom at the break.
The Blossoms started the second half on a 7-2 scoring run to take its firstlead of the game at the 17:43 mark on a three-pointer by Grady. Lindenwood answered back to take a one-point lead two minutes later, but the Blossoms regained the lead for the final time on another three-pointer from Grady at the 15:41 mark.
Lindenwood trimmed UAM's lead to two points at the 8:32 mark of the final period before UAM grew its lead to as much as 11 points with 5:31 remaining in regulation.
For the game, UAM finished at 60 percent from the field (29-of-48), 60 percent on three-pointers (9-of-15) and 61 percent on free throws (17-of-28). Lindenwood shot 50 percent from the field (32-of-64), 31 percent on three-pointers (4-of-13) and 60 percent on foul shots (6-of-10).
UAM held a 30-29 edge in rebounding, but finished at negative three in the turnover margin at 15-12.
Marissa Lehnig led Lindenwood with 16 points in 27 minutes off the bench, while Caroline Bourlioux added 14 points.
The Blossoms are back in action next Wednesday, November 13 at home againstLeMoyne Owen College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Steelman Field House. This is a change to the schedule, which originally had the Blossoms making the trip to Memphis, Tenn. to face the Lady Magicians.
