#21 UAM aims for first win with weekend series against #13 Augustana (S.D.)

The 21st ranked UAM baseball team will host No. 13 Augustana (S.D.) over the weekend in search of its first win of the 2020 campaign. The Weevils will play a doubleheader with the Vikings on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m., and another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The 21st ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team will host No. 13 Augustana University (S.D.) over the weekend in search of its first win of the 2020 campaign. The Weevils will play a doubleheader with the Vikings on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m., and another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.

RING CEREMONY
The UAM Baseball team will hold a ring ceremony tomorrow around 11:40 a.m. before game one. There, the athletic department will hand out the rings the 2019 team earned for winning the 2019 Regular Season GAC Championship.

WEEVIL NOTES
UAM comes into this one with an 0-3 record after playing three games at the Houston Astros Winter Invitational last the weekend. UAM lost to two nationally ranked opponents in No. 23 Colorado School of Mines and No. 18 Millersville University, along with unranked Flagler College.
 
Thus far in 2020, the Weevils have struggled to hit at the plate combining for 15 hits in 99 at-bats (.152). Andrew Piraino has led the way however batting .375 (3-for-8) with two RBI on a double and two singles. He's also worked eight walks and has been solid defensively throwing out a pair of runners behind the plate.
 
Ryan Tow is the other UAM hitter batting above .300 with a .333 average (1-for-3) with a double.
 
Accounting for the other Weevil runs are David Reyna and Audy Clary who have each driven in one apiece.
 
UAM's leadoff man Cade Thompson has three hits in 12 at-bats hitting .250 with a run scored and a double.
 
The Weevils have also tallied five stolen bases with two coming from Hudson Hopkins and one apiece from Thompson, Reyna and Cole Muckleroy.
 
On the mound, Ojani Chacon and River Hunt surrendered no runs over the weekend in their appearances. Chacon hurled 2.0 shutout innings striking out three and Hunt went 3.2 scoreless with five punchouts.
 
Matt Lundh had a quality start on Friday to open the season surrendering one earned run in a 2-0 loss while striking out seven batters.

VIKING NOTES
Augustana, who was a very tough team offensively, brings back seven key offensive performers from a season ago including two of their three top batters in JT Mix and Will Olson.
 
Mix batted .384 (66-for-172) and was 13-of-16 in stolen base attempts while scoring 45 runs. Olson was the team's top power hitter batting .349 (60-for-172) with eight home runs and 49 RBI.
 
Other returnees to the Viking lineup are Ryan Nickel, Jordan Barth, Jaxon Rosencranz and Sam Baier. Each of them started in at least 42 games last season.
 
On the hill, Tate Meiners, Max Steffens and Tanner Brown each return for the 2020 campaign.
 
Meiners was a key reliever for the Vikings hurling in 24 games tallying a 2.51 ERA (9 ER in 32.1 IP). Steffens was the team's top starter with a 9-1 record recording a 2.77 ERA (30 ER in 97.1 IP) and seven complete games. Brown was 7-2 on the year allowing 25 ER in 71.0 IP while leading the team in strikeouts with 84.
 
UP NEXT
UAM will play its makeup game with No. 9 Delta State University on Tuesday from Weevils Field in Monticello. It will be nine-inning contest beginning at 2 p.m.
