Former Sweet 16 Teammates Reunite On All-Decade Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Former University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball players Billy McDaniel and Nate Newell were recently selected to the Gulf South Conference All-Decade Team. McDaniel made the first team, while Newell made the second team.

McDaniel (above left) was a four-time All-GSC West selection from 2003-06 and earned National Basketball Coaches Association First Team All-America honors in 2004. He is still the third all-time leading scorer in UAM men’s basketball history with 2,047 career points. He owns school records in career rebounds (1,195), single-season rebounds (345, 2002-03), career rebound average (10.5) and single-season rebound average (12.8, 2002-03). In GSC history, McDaniel ranks fourth all-time in scoring and third in career rebounds.

Newell (above right) was a three-time All-GSC West selection, including first team honors in 2005 and 2007. In 2006, Newell led the Boll Weevils to the NCAA Sweet 16, and for his efforts in the postseason tournament, he was named NCAA South Region Tournament Co-MVP. A year later, he was selected to the Daktronics All-America Third Team. He is still the second all-time leading scorer in UAM history with 2,168 points and owns school records in career three-pointers made (355), career free-throws made (641) and single-season free-throws made (192). In GSC history, Newell ranks fourth in all-time scoring and leads the conference in career free throws made. In addition, he ranks second in conference history in career free throws attempted (783) as well as career three-pointers made.
