WEEVILS SQUANDER BIG LEAD IN LOSS TO STATESMEN

MONTICELLO – Despite leading by 17 points in the second half, the University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team suffered a 72-65 loss to Delta State on Saturday at home.

The Boll Weevils (11-8, 3-4 Gulf South Conference) started the contest by scoring the game’s first 10 points, before the Statesmen (10-10, 4-3 GSC) answered with an 11-0 run to take their only lead of the first half.

UAM held a 14-point lead at 42-28 after outscoring the Statesmen 15-7 in the final five minutes of the first half.

The Boll Weevils took their 17-point lead in the first two minutes of the second half on five consecutive points from junior LA Farmer. However, UAM’s 26 percent field goal shooting in the second half allowed the Statesmen to make a run. UAM went on a five-minute scoring drought, which led to the game’s second tie score with 5:06 remaining in regulation at 58-all.

DSU’s Phil Turner broke that tie with a three-pointer at the 4:26 mark to give DSU its first lead of the second half. However, the lead change was the last of the contest. The Boll Weevils only managed to tie the game once more with 4:03 remaining on a three-pointer by junior Sergio Crowe. It was Crowe’s season-high seventh three-pointer of the game.

The Statesmen outscored UAM 11-4 in the final four minutes, including a pair of dunks and four points off free-throws.

Crowe’s seven three-pointers led to a game high 21 points. He also added 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season, all five coming in the last six contests. Junior Ricardo Hall and Farmer also reached double-figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Farmer tallied a game-high nine assists.

The Statesmen placed four scorers in double-figures. Marqueys Brown led the team with 19 points, followed by Phil Turner with 17, Arian Maliqi with 16 and Jay Murphy with 10.

The Boll Weevils finished the contest shooting 38 percent from the field (21-of-56), 38 percent on three-pointers (11-of-29) and 75 percent at the foul line (12-of-16). The Statesmen shot 48 percent from the field (29-of-60), 29 percent on three-pointers (6-of-21) and 62 percent at the foul line (8-of-13).

UAM returns to action this Thursday, February 3 in Memphis, Tenn. against Christian Brothers to start the second round of GSC games. Thursday’s tipoff is set for approximately 7 p.m. at Canale Arena.
